question about colors

Hello everyone,
I'm new here and considoring becoming more active in the culture. I am Muscogee Creek (card carrying) & Cherokee (non-card carrying)... I really don't even know how to get started honestly. I've been doing beading for over a year now my Mother-in-law taught me and I'm getting fairly good at it. My Mom's fiance is a fancy dancer and my Mom is making him all new Regalia and asked me to bead some new pieces for him so I am making him a large (5 inch) rosette that will go in the center of his bustle. Well anyways...thats another matter.
He is of a different tribal background than myself and he uses his own tribal colors. I was wondering if I wanted to get started and make my own regalia and start dancing myself what colors should I use? What is appropriate? I love the fancy shawl dancing but I'm not in a good enough physical shape being overweight and I think I'm just too old (27)... so I'm thinking about doing southern cloth... I would love to do buckskin but HOLY COW is that expensive! So anyways... should I go with traditional tribal colors for creek or cherokee but I dont even know what the traditional colors for those tribes are.... or should I just go with what I like? My Mom-in-law (who's a white woman) and I have been having a disagreement about this because she thinks its not "allowed" to use whatever colors you want and that I have to go with tribal or traditional colors... what do you all think?
Thanks so much!

First off let me say your not to old to Fancy dancer, I'm 26 and I know some people that are older than me who fancy.

As for the colors, nowadays most people just do want ever colors they want. So you can go with traditional colors or you can pick something else. Or do both make one in traditional colors and one with contemperary ones, that way you can change it up.

Oh yeah, welcome to the site.

thanks everyone..
dancinfancy, I'm just afraid I won't be able to keep up because of my bad knees and weak ankles... and I'm really overweight but to me the fancy shawl dancing is just beautiful and I would love to be apart of it... maybe I should play around with it and see if I can do it!

Migiziwomen, I know I should be ashamed for arguing with her about it but I knew I was right LOL.. she's a very crafty person and can make just about anything... she took some beading classes a few years ago and I wanted to learn so she taught me..well now she thinks she knows everything. I'm just afraid when it comes to making my Regalia that she's gonna step in and try to take over and I want to do it the way I want it..including colors!

Eagle_Plumes, Thanks so much for your input as well... I just dont want to make a fool of myself... especially since I'm a big girl.

Thanks ladies for all the warm welcomes... very much appreciated

Well, you can go to walmart and get knee and ankle braces to help with support, there are alot of girls who use them. With excerise you can get your body used to the physical part of it. Just to let you in on a secret I have 2 spinial disorders and have torn the ligaments in my knee and ankle and I still can kick it. It's all about what your body is used to doing. I even went back to fancy 6 weeks after having my son. It's what you set your mind to, if you want it go have it.

I agree that for a modern powwow outfit, use the colors you like. But don't take my work too seriously, I'm no better than a white woman, LOL! Out of curiosity, what are Muskogee and Cherokee colors? I lived with the Cherokee for 5 years in NE Okla and learned quite a bit, but I don't recall any specific colors denoting the tribe. Care to elighten this ignorant fool?

from what I've been told... and I could be wrong here... because like I said... I'm kinda new to this whole thing
but as far as I know the colors of the tribe are the colors that are in their insignia...like the tribal seal... creek is green and yellow from what I understand if you go to Muscogee (Creek) Nation you can see the insignia in the top right corner... as for Cherokee
Cherokee Nation on the left hand top it shows their insignia as having red, goldish yellow and green... so who knows! LOL
I think I'm either gonna go with rainbow colors (red, purple, blue, orange, yellow and maybe some white) or my own little idea of turquoise, pink, white and silver...but who knows LOL

If I'm not mistaken someone told me once that the Cherokee colors were blue, black, white, red, yellow, brown, and green. I'm not entirely sure how correct this is but that's what I was told.

Well, orange, pink, and purple are about the only colors not included in that list, so I guess that makes sense. How could you possible make an outfit without using one of those colors? I guess you're safe no matter what. LOL!

I know right every time I make an outfit I always use purple and and/or pink. I can't imagine a fancy outfit without them.

Thanks for the info!
This is what I'm gonna do... basically I'm gonna go to the fabric store and look around at what colors catch my eye... than I'll use those fabrics for the regalia... than do the beading with whatever goes with that... but pretty sure I'm gonna go with rainbow colors :)

That's what I do when I go into the fabric store I look for one color that catches my eye as my main color then look for the colors that look the best with it. I always have a design drawn out so that I know how any colors I need and can decide how I want to lay it out. That way when I get home and start cutting I know it's all going tto work. I hate having to stop working on something because a color isn't going to work or I didn't get enough of everything.
