Gustoweh Frames

I am working on making a Gustoweh for my regalia. This is my first one so im not 100 % how to put it all together. I have the frame made of leather. The trouble I am having is this. I have seen alot of the frames wraped with leather or velvet as well as I have seen a few that where covered. I kinda like the wraping method but I am unsure as to how its done. Like when you wrap it where and how do you secure it? Is it a pain to sew your bead work on it afterwards?

well, the easiest way is to stitch it on. i'll try and explain this as best i can. all you need to do is cut a piece of buckskin wide enough to fold over the browband as well as the pieces that go over your head. make sure the stitching is on the outside of the hat so it's not pressing against your forehead. obviously have the stitching on the inside for the remainder of the hat. and no it's pretty easy to stitch beadwork onto the leather. hope this helps and i explained it ok.

Gustoweh instructions

"Costume Of The Iroquois" by Robert Gabor has fairly detailed descriptions along with illustrations of how to make a gustoweh and many other Iroquois costume pieces and crafts. It's available here on Flickr as a photoset: Costume of the Iroquois by R Gabor - a photoset on Flickr
