What is a "wind band"?

I try to never post anywhere except the "Spectator" section, but this question went nowhere there. Can you tell me what a "wind band" is? As in..."he always wore a red wind band." I did an internet search and got nothing.

In the context of the Mattiessen book, it is a headband.

Thanks so much! That was exactly the book I had seen it in. In my mind I thought perhaps he was referring to something like a bandana, but had never heard anyone use the term "wind band" and it was driving me crazy. Thanks again!
