Question about using Duck feathers

I know about Eagle and Hawk Feathers. But I want to make sure it is legal to use duck feathers. A friend of ours gave some duck feathers with beautiful Green and some with irridescent Blue. And I thought it would be great to use in making some fans. I appreciate any help and am honored by those that will take the time to help answer my question.

Thank You, CanteLake

I would contact your local department of resources to make sure, but I believe they are legal.

I found out while shopping in a local Fly-tying shop, that the owner was very knowledgable about this subject.

Thank you for the idea WocusWoman. I am truly blessed I found an awesome gift on the ground this morning when I went outside. I looked down and there were two beautiful yellow flicker feathers.

Should be fine, they sell duck feathers in craft stores and such.

check with the DNR for your state. some duck varieties are protected under the migratory bird act. some localities require a permit to take birds regardless. my exwife got a 75$ fine for grabbing a roadkill canada goose once because she didnt have the required papers to do so.

so yellow flickers, are they illegal? I saw something that said they are short distance migrants so does that make them protected under the Migratory Bird Act?? just wondering.

Yes, they are. The list of legal feathers is very very short.
