Im assuming you are talking ribbon, and not chainette? Is it already on a shawl, or still on a spool/bobbin thingie? If on a shawl, you can try to soak it in cold water in the bath tub, then hang it up stretched out and let it drip dry ... that might help. Also, if it is the satin ribbon, you can iron them on low with a little steam...but, not alot of steam- and dont get the iron to hot! That can mess up the ribbon. Test it out on some scrap ribbon if you have any to get the setting right. Dont wanna mess up the good stuff on her shawl. Good luck!

Is this precut fringe? If so, try using a clothing steamer. If you have a nice understanding dry cleaner with a steamer, they can do this for a small charge. When I worked at a clothing store, we carried some evening gowns that were inspired by flapper dresses with tons of chainette fringe. They would arrive wadded up in bags. A few minutes with the steamer and they smoothed right out.

Ironing fringe is risky and needs to be done with care, as chainette and flat fringe are miracles of modern organic chemistry and have the same natural fiber content (and melting point) as say a cheese food snack, LOL.

try putting in a towel or covering it with something before you iron it

you could also try throwing it in a dryel bag with the cloth and see if that does'nt help since it does create a dry clean steam in the bag that will also leave the chainette smelling nice. Or hang it up in the bathroom when you take a nice steamy shower. That's how mom got most of the wrinkles out my dresses and such as a kid.
