Attaching the feathers in this manner should be fairly easy.
The arc of feathers is strung/constructed in a manner similar to the way you string a bustle. There is a loop of some sort (leather, bobby pin, wire tie, etc) at the base of the feather shaft through which a string is run. This string is the one that holds the feathers on the stick. There is a second string (in the picture, there appear to be yellow beads as spacers) that runs a little farther up the feather quill, but not into the barbs. By adjusting the spacing of the feathers and the tension of the strings, you are able to achieve the fan appearance this dancer has on his dance stick. It takes a little experiementation to get the arc just right. The feathers on the top appear to be attached in a manner similar to a loose or drop fan. The smaller feathers are likely attached to the stick via a small loop of leather and then wrapped onto the tip of the stick. I have to guess as to how the body feathers are attached, assuming they are actually a part of the stick. I would venture to say they are stacked on an extension of some sort, similar to how a set of ladies' fluffs are constructed. I am having a hard time thinking of how to explain it, but imagine starting at the top of the stick and stacking the feathers as you work your way down the stick. Hopefully someone else will be better at explaining that part. Hope this helped. |
