What do moccasins cost ?
I'm making some moccasins for someone and I'm not entirely sure what to charge for them. Anyone know the going rate? I enjoy the work, but if I charge by the hour they'd be really expensive. I haven't ever bought em, so what's the going rate?

Sure
Northern plains, latigo sole, partially beaded. Lane around the outside, one across the top and one down the toe. Just enough to give it some color. Will have probably been 15 hours work total when I'm done.

The rub
There in lies the rub. They're hand beaded, and hand sewn. If you charge by the hour they can start getting pretty expensive. Plus materials if you used your own.
Hard to know sometimes. huh? d

This sounds very close to what I charge when doing a pair...though I break down the charges more based on type of moc, the kind of hide used, kind of beads used and the size of the persons foot. Had to make a pair for a fella once that had a ski for a foot (size 16 - charged a good bit more than $250 for those fully beaded mocs).

Size matters ?
That's a first. LOL. I agree. These are HUGE. Sounds tho, like I'm pretty close to the average in the amount I'm leaning towards. Thanks.

I can go higher depending on what I'm doing.Remember- I brain tan my own hides & smoke 'em AND I use bison hide for the soles. No crappy latigo for me. I've been told I'm cheap!

If you are doing your own hides and using what you say you are then I would have to say...yes you are definately cheap and are sell your many skill well below what they are actually worth. Big thing to consider in all of this is where you are and how many others in your area can do what you do. If there are 50 folks that can make mocs where you live then you are not going to get as much as if you lived an area that only has 2.

If you want to use bison for the soles- find a guy who does taxidermy and see if he's got a hide that the hair slipped on. Finish de-hairing and leave dermal layer on. Tan it. Latigo is a tanned hide that has not been softened, Just don't break down the fibers of the buff if you want it stiff. Since it's 1/2" to 1/4" thick I break down the fibers some for easier turning of the finished moc. Or just leave it as rawhide and finish your soles that way. I pick up slipped hides for $20.
