What should I make out of my huge Turtle?
Normally, I never allow anyone, nor kill any animal myself, unless it is going to be eaten. I was actually trying to save this HUGE snapping turtle's life... (it was in the middle of a very busy road) ...a couple stopped and asked if they could helped me, I know I must have looked pretty stupid as this thing was trying to bite me, he said that he and his wife ate them! I told him that he could have it, if I could have the shell. WOW, what a shell! It is larger than the steering wheel of my car! What can I make out of it? I know the smaller ones make great rattles...but this one is soooooo huge. I have cured it on the roof already and preserved the top of it with a varnish...what do I do now? Any suggesstions?
Also, how do you completely clean the underside of the shell? It is still ICKY! Thanks! Whispering Eagle

I'd let the bugs take care of the underside.... what can you make with it? As far as regalia goes I have no clue.. Something that size I'd be hanging on my wall LOL! That big... was it an Alligator Snapper? If so.. be careful. I think I saw on Animal Planet that they are now under protection because of overhunting and slow reproduction... If it's just a regular snapper no biggie.

I'd go with Blackbear on the bugs. I've cleaned deer toes that were -- uh -- a little rustic by leaving them on an ant hill (don't pick fire ants, LOL). A little tent of chicken wire will discourage stray dogs.
As for what to make: a bowl springs to mind. |

oh snapping turtle soup is mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.................. One of the gals I graduated high school with had a cajun daddy and he'd make us turtle soup and smoked mutton... red beans and rice...... good stuff! That reminds me.. I got olive relish somewhere.. I should make some muffalettas for lunch tomorrow!

The people that took him, didn't make Turtle soup out of him..his wife says she fillets it in slices and breads the meat then fries it in an oil. She said that it is delicious that way.
