my first roach
I went ahead and put together the kit I ordered from Noc Bay. I think it turned out pretty good. Porky hair would probably stand up better than the horsehair. I added an extra row of horsehair on the inside to give it a bit more support.

That looks pretty good. Looks like you have the front hair at about 7 1/2" and that is pretty good. Any longer than that and the horse hair will droop bad...though you will still have problems with what you have made in humid conditions. Your knots look pretty good for a rookie, you might try keeping the hair folded over the tying cord tighter so you get a more even bundle when tied. I can't see your base very well so I can't comment much on it, even though it is one of the more important part. Like most things in life you have to a good base to work up from. Now as to that inside row you mentioned to 'give it a bit more support'...it won't do anything to help it stand up well. It will make the roach look thicker which is preferred by most dancers, but will do nothing to make it stand up better. Like Blackbear said...time to move on to porky hair. Just remember that like quills, you have soak the base of the porky in water before tying to soften it or it will break when tied. Good luck and good work.
