Don't know if you remember but we had a thread like this about a year or so ago, had some good tips in it. You might check the archives. I don't remember if it was in crafts or tradish. I think SDinAZ and powwowbum had som good tips, might try pming them too.

Plain undecorated feathers can be washed in Woolite. Never use harsh soaps as they take the oils out. You can buy products at the pet store to clean and shine feathers on parrots, these work great for shining and restoring feathers. Don"t wash fluffs or decorated feathers or FANS.

Forgot one...a taxidermist I know told me You can Store feathers, fans, etc in between sheets of fabric softner like Bounce. Keeps them shiny, and BUG FREE.
The old way was just lots of smoke...

Woolite is the best for feathers. Run some luke warm water in your bathroom sink and wash the feathers carefully. Lay them out to dry for a couple hours (overnight), or use a blowdryer to shape them better. Then fit them between a large book to flatten them.
You can wash plumes, but it's better to blowdry them afterward to get them nice and fluffy. Use a large toothed comb to get the tangles out. But always, be careful! Sometimes you can use White Rit Dye to erase blood stains from Bald white feathers. But this weakens them and you should only do it once. |
