Dance stick extenders
How do you make your dance sticks?
What do you use to connect the wooden handle to the end hackles: shoestring, leather, chain, rope?

I use shoestring with strung with pony beads of a stripe pattern that matches the ribbon fringe pattern on the outfit I'm wearing and has hackles on the end that match the set of bustles I'm wearing. I have one set of beaded dance sticks (for now) and I rotate what I attach to them. I usually take 3 sets of bustles of a dance and I have three dance stick attachments, 1 to match each of the bustles. It just takes a moment to snap off and on a new attachment. I keep them in a box in the bottom of my suitcase. I've had no problem with shoestring (doubled), but friends use chain. As long as you've got a good way to attach them to the screw/eye thingy on the dance stick, you're good to go.

Boozhoo niji,
I made mine out of some wooden dowel, I got a piece from the hardware store about 9/16ths inch thick, and 3 feet long. I cut it in half for starters, then made my sticks from that. On the handle end, I sanded the end round and drilled a hole in it for a wrist strap. Then the other end I got a couple of steal braces, little pieces of metal with two holes drilled in it. I took a stout wood screw and screwed that into the end, through one of the holes, but left it just loose enough to spin. Then I put a key ring in the other hole. The key rings are good because you can change out your feathers when they get dirty or broke. I have some rope that we use for recoil starters on lawnmowers, its red and black so it matches my outfit. I tied a loop in each end and whipped it back on itself with some red thread, and put another keyring in each loop. I eventually shortened my sticks by about an inch, figuring they would be about right, and adjusted the rope and number of feathers as necessary. I get out there and dance, and it feels like I am whipping around a pair of chucks. Derek
