I have seen several cartwheels in fancy dance routines. Yes, it is a real eye catcher. I've only seen one true backflip by a men's fancy dancer during a dance contest. It took place during the rodeo finals powwow a long time ago. It was pretty impressive. . . but the fancy dancer couldn't dance worth beans.

I have even heard that a straight dancer did a backflip at powwow.....but I wasn't "there" so I can't say for sure that it actually happened.

Poncho did one at the Meskwaki Proclamation last year, haven't seen him this year. Back in the 70s it was common. Back flippin' was big then too, especially if you could land on the last beat. The back flip went away for two reasons, 1) the athletic guys stopped dancing (injuries or something) and 2) the bustles got bigger. Last attempt I saw was in the mid-90s, but it wasn't a true backflip, is was more of a back handspring (in a flip you don't use your hands). With the handspring, if your not going to make it all the way around, you can just push with you hands to get you around.
The only real relic from those days is the splits (or hurdler stretch for those who aren't flexible enough). Used to be everybody went down. I did see the "wagon wheel" last summer, that's where you put one hand on the ground and circle around it.
