Old Style Fancy
What do you guys consider old style fancy? I've heard some explanations like "no excessive spinning", "no whip sticks", etc., but I was wondering what in general is looked for in old style?
Also, weren't moves like cartwheels, splits, and flips done in the "olden" days? Thanks.

There is a video on powwow cast and the sme video is in the fancy gallery of the old style fancy. The outfit she's wear has no real design on it and the shawl has fringe not ribbon. But go check it out that will give you an idea.

Are you from Georgia? *L I talked to another person from Georgia today... Chief Harry Dakota. Anybody know this guy? He told me he was a "National Powwow Traditional Dance Champion," and claims he won 13 out of 15 dance championships this year so far. Hmmmmmmm? Two Georgia people in one day. "Boy am I lucky."

Hey I hate to say I am from Georgia. I've might him a few times before, he's from N. Carolina and is a Traditional dancer. As far as him being this great camp I couldn't tell you he's never at any of the comps. that I'm at. I only see him at the noncompetiton powwows, so can't help you there. But if you really wanna know I can ask around.

Gave all of us his business card: Chief Harry Dakota Champion Northern Traditional Dancer and Storyteller of the Oneida/Ojibwa Tribes I can give yall his phone # if you want it! hehehehehe"Dance performances available" Last edited by Takin' Numbers; 08-29-2007 at 06:29 PM. |

Takin, I actually had my eye on him. He came in to the VIP area and told the registrars he was a chief and needed a VIP pass for himself and his bodyguard. Then he proceeded to pass his card and brochures to everyone. Later I saw him getting people like yourself to take pictures for his calendar. Hmmmmmm? The funniest part is that he couldn't stop on time in his contest ... if his "chiefin" depended on it.

ANG, He can get in a whole lot of trouble misrepresenting himself as being sponsored by the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian is very concerned about things like this. I wonder what he "really is going to do with the photographs?" He gave me a beaded eagle feather. . . and I disposed of it. I am very careful of things given to me not to bring them into my house if they seem suspect. I know he is probably harmless. There are people out there that actually believe the lies they tell people! and he is one of them! BEWARE!!!

old style
well to comment on old style fancy i remember it being also called the crazy dance. older people actually forbade their youth to dance it. the omaha had a name for it i forgot. yet even the original fancy dance song sounds interesting like a chicken dance. fancy dancers in the old dayz were basically straight dancers who added a bit more footwork to their steps. most chicken dancers carry the same articles as straight dancers. yet the northern tribes now have their own societies just as the southern tribes have their tail dance societies. johny whitecloud made fancy dance what it is today by changing the bustle. before fancy and chicken was basically the same. and from what i was told about woodland style, it was like chicken or free style dance similar to old style fancy. theres my two cents.

Speaking of old style, has anyone else been paying attention to these feather roaches that are starting to pop back into the outfits in Okla? I have seen George Alexander's, and another guy, and have heard that Poncho has one but have yet to see any pics. I think this is cool stuff!

I got a chance to take a close look at George's headdress last Sunday. It is a smaller version of the once popular southern plains feathered headdresses.
