Back into the arena this weekend
I am heading back into the arena this weekend after a 20 year "break" from fancy dancing. Thanks go to Whome, BeadMan, CrazyWolf and bwhite for their postings regarding regalia contruction and fancy dance history. I very much appreciate it. Posts from these gentleman are what got me originally thinking about getting back into the arena. Also, this has had the desired affect on the younger generation at our camp: I have one 13 year-old and one 9 year-old helping me with my regalia. They are as excited as I am and I will be surprised if they aren't dancing with me next year. Again, thanks to all the dilligent posters in this forum. Wanishi!
P.S. If you ever attend the Delaware Pow Wow outside of Copan, OK, please stop by the Whiteturkey camp and say Hey. We are in the south-east corner of the grounds, just north-east of the Indian football field. |

You have been wanting this time to come for quite a while. It is people like you that inspire not only our young ones, but all of us that dance. It lets us know that it is important. It is part of who we are and that we should be thankful for the Powwow and what it gives us.
We are so happy for you and wish we could be there with you and your family. It was good to talk with you today and know that our hearts are with you.

Just got back from Oklahoma. It was a great pow wow and good medicine.
Drippin With Beads: I didn't realize you had a pw.com account; I neglected to mention you in my original post, but you are the primary reason I was able to get back into the arena. My family and I owe you a great debt and we would like to properly thank you. I hope you can make it to next year's Delaware pow wow; we will always have an open bunk for you at our camp. Wanishi! ndnsooner: Yes, I did get to dance. I was the red, white and blue fancy dancer. I had noticed some of your posts mentioning the Delaware pow wow and was going to try to contact you and invite you to our camp, but my internet connection died shortly before I left for Oklahoma. In the future, you are welcome at the Whiteturkey camp. Stop by and have some Indian tacos and corn soup. :) Thanks again to everyone. We may have as many as five new dancers next year. Wanishi! |

I think I remember seeing you out there. Man, those two songs they gave the adult men's fancy dancers were wicked!! Made me glad I've switched to grass dance LOL
Congratulations on dancing again!!

Buckskinrose: Yes, ma'am, that was me. Your boys were wonderful. It touches my heart to see the young ones dance.
ndnsooner: Nope, I didn't contest. After hearing the two contest songs, I am glad I didn't. That was vicious. It seemed like everyone was hard-pressed to pull off any major moves at that speed. My favorite has always been George Alexander. That guy can really rip. middle of the sky: Thank you very much. Wojapi4Me: Tell me about it. I'm no expert, but it seems like the fancy contest songs get faster year after year. I think also they might have been rushing due to the weather. |

ndnsooner: yes, but that was a long time back... twenty years or more. It was for only one year when I was going from black and yellow (tiny tot) to red and black (slightly-less-tiny tiny tot), so you might be thinking of someone else. Around 10 I ended up in red, white and blue, which are the colors I chose for my new outfit. My grandmother was Rubye Whiteturkey (God rest her soul), if that helps.
