Do you think it is proper to combine new age dancing such as Breakdancing,Gymnastics, & and other types of physical dances with Fancy Feather Dancing?

I believe that the crowd are the judges. If you try those new moves and the crowd loves it than you're doing something right? 'right:D

No way - that's not dancing! Come from old school and will stay old school. Fancy dancing is about footwork, keeping time with the drum and the all important stop on time.

Not too crazy about those that drop items (no such thing as incidental drop) or overstep. If you loose something or can't make the stop then walk off--be gracious and a good sport. Also don't call for a second song if the first is a STOP SONG (not trick song) and you miss it. You should know those!!!!!!!!

The only "old Skool" Canadian style, is a guy by the Name of Junior Stone (Mosquito First Nation) This guy is "old Skool" he is fast, and gets faster at every pow wow I see him at..... He is a little older too, I think he is over 30 years old, and still kicks "butt" He is amasing, and graceful, and got alot of footwork combined, with hammering the "down-beats"

You watch him, and see what the ladies on the pow wow trail say about this guy.... I remeber seeing him this year at the Gold Eagle Casino Pow Wow , he "rocked" ........ "FaST and Furious"..........

Fancy dancing is not traditional, so pretty much anything goes. This is what was told to me by several judges.

If you can pull off the fancy moves, the cartwheels, moonwalking, anything that keeps time with the drum and catches the judges eye, if it helps you to win, then do it.

I would like to see a fancy dancer pull off one of those breakdance headspins though. LOL just kidding, but if some of these people pull off the extreme moves and crash on their bustles, I dont think they are going to win any competitions.

Fancy dancing was originally called "Crazy dancing" and was born out of the Ponca Man Dance/Helushka ceremony.

Since this inception, the fancy dance has evolved to it's present form which bares a little resemblance to when it first began.

Break dancing and gymnastics have already been introduced since the 1950's.

In the 50's there was dancing with one hand on the ground. In the 60's there was the cartwheel. In the 70's there was the the Russian Kicks and splits. In the late 80's there was the back handspring (definitely influenced by break dancing) and pommel turns.

There may be more physical fancy dance moves that I am not aware of?

too much is too much, i don't want to name names, but about 10 years ago was the first time i saw a few dancers dancing to their own beat. almost like it was in their head. Its like they had been dancing to a different drum other than the one that was singing.. They were going nuts out there. That was too much. I remember when dancers like Rick Cleveland and Tommy Snowball cruised real smooth with their fancy footwork and didnt need to go all crazy like. Now we got alot of young guys who cant be as smooth as the old skool, so they pull out the mad crazy stuff, and some can pull it off but like Spike and Micheal Roberts, They can really kick *** out there,They make crazy moves look good.
We need more old skoolers to come back and show some of these young guys what real fancy dancin is
Sadly there are pow-wows where some of the judges are clueless and are only judging cuz the head judge couldnt find anyone else, its called luck for some dancers. Dissapointing for others
I guess new age is ok, as long as they stay on beat

I got the real pleasure of watching Tommy Snowball dance at Hollywood last year, yeah he is real smooth. Didnt pay too much attention to Spike or Michael because I was competing against them. I admire dancers like Tommy and George Alexander. Those guys have some real fluid footwork. They go seamless from one trick to the next and its something that I work on doing in my footwork.

I wish I could see some of these other guys dancing but I dont see any of them comming to Florida. George I saw on a video I got from Crazy Crow. I also got to watch Michael on Robert Miribals video. He is real good, was good to compete against him.

When I was a little girl, I remember seeing Elmer Brown turn cartwheels and handflips while he was competing and it was awesome because HE KEPT TIME WITH THE DRUM, while doing it. He did'nt miss a beat...LOL I remember Jr. Moore sliding his feet, dancing on one foot while turning a circle...smooth dancing. I remember Johnny WhiteCloud using the whole arena but still keep dancing, not missing a beat.
That is the whole point of fancy dancing....to do your moves while keeping in time with the drum.
How come no one can "shake" or "ruffle" on a ruffle dance anymore???? It is kind of pathetic the way everyone will just hop around when they are supposed to be shaking. RG could ruffle, from head to toe, old school to the max. It's hard on the knees, no doubt, but it makes your whole outfit dance and move...where are the dancers that can do that???? Who cares what moves you can do, if you can fit them into the rhythm of the drumbeat and stop on time, show your style while keeping the beat, and make the crowd stand up and say"Heck yeah!!!" Fancy dancing is doing the fancy moves, your feet HITTING each beat, staying in time, stopping on time and using your whole outfit and body to dance. That is what catches the eye, and you can tell who does it, because their outfit just MOVES!!!
