Origination of the term "Fancy Feather Dancing"

The thing that first struck me about this forum was the name: Fancy Feather Dancing. I have never heard anyone use that term here in Texas or Oklahoma nor I have I seen it used in print or at any pow wow I have ever attended. Mostly I see just Fancy Dance or Fancy War Dance. Is this term in common usage in your area?

This is a good question.

I was emcee at a powwow with a huge nonIndian audience this past weekend. I used the term "fancy feather dancers" to distinguish them from the "fancy shawl dancers" during the grand entry.

Before the contest I again referred to the men's fancy dance category as fancy feather dancers (aka. Men's fancy dancers and double bustle dancers). Before their contest, I gave information about the origin of this dance (names, dates and locations) in order for the audience to have a greater appreciation for the dance and competition that took place.

I don't hear that term either; it's alway Mens fancy dancers..

Up in the Lookout, we call it "that double bustle style" in conversation and Men's Fancy in the arena.

Here in Cali "fancy feather dancers" are commonly referred to as "men's fancy dancers" or "fancy war dancers" sometimes even as "double bustle dancers"
