Fancy Dance Memories - Chico Her Many Horses transcript
I ran across this on the web and thought I would share. Probably everyone here knows who Chico Her Many Horses is. This is a transcript of Chico in 1980 recounting his memories of Northern fancy through the 60's and 70's. Fascinating account from a true Northern champion. My favorite part is when he describes Joe Bointy as a "tough cookie". And he still is!
Hmm... I don't see the attachment on my post so I hunted down the link to the pdf: http://www.marquette.edu/library/col...memories%22%22 Last edited by TahlequahLenape; 10-07-2006 at 01:39 PM. |

Thank TahlequahL,
This is a good interview from someone who is really in the know about northern fancy dance history. I wonder if Chico has this transcript?

Boozhoo niji,
Chimiigwetch for sharing this Talequah. I had seen Chicos picture in that book that everyone knows about, the CCTP one, and I often wonder how some of these guys feel when they go out. I dunno if I felt a common thread with these guys or any kind of friendship or whatever. This article really opened my eyes up for at least one guy. Yeah, we got a lot of the same feelings when we dance. Just dancing for the song, getting the timing right and letting your body go, thats pretty much how I felt. I also appreciate the explaination of the differences between northern and southern. Finally, someone has put it down in black and white. Its kinda funny, cause I walk down the middle. My outfit is made kinda southern, but I dance more northern. I wish I could meet him, maybe I will someday, dunno if its good or bad to idolize these other dancers, but hey I aint got anyone down here to learn from, had to look at pictures and videos to get any kind of moves at all. Readin stuff like this helps a lot. Talking to other dancers helps more, if any of them give a care to talk. Derek |
