I don't have any favs because their all good in their own way. But I do like the way Alex Wells and Grant Shade dance. Grant Shade hasn't been dancing for long but he beat out some pretty good dancers in Peigan this past summer. He took 2nd or 3rd in the Iron man contest that weekend. Anywayz...Their all good, they all have a unique style that's all their own.

rg

Rg is classic. He started dancing senior division when he was 15, because he was so darn tall. He has won Ponca his traditional 4 times, therefore retiring. He is definitely old school, I can remember when Dwight used to follow him around when Dwight was in Jr. Division, before he became the fancy dance king. Rg used to follow Johnny Whitecloud around when Rg was in jr.'s.
Rg danced up North when they used to do eliminations every night back in the mid-70's. The Nathan and Leon Thompson and Damon Brady days.
Rg is 44 years old and getting a new outfit done to hit those 35 and overs that are the new rage now. When he was in his days, his knees were well, you could feel his spirit when he danced. He was awesome. There is a video "into the circle" where he and Jonathon Windyboy were in their element.
The new ones that are awesome:
D. Tramper: seen him at Kinder
Wayne Silas
Daryl Jack (awesome)
Tonch St. John
Michael Roberts: he makes me so proud to watch him dance southern fancy because he keeps to the style. And he stops on time. He studies his songs. You can see his whole being going into his dancing.
Remember when stopping on time meant you knew your dance style and the songs that go with it. That's "gone with the wind". ha ha

Northern dancers:
Larry Yazzie: beautiful outfit, great dancing
Jerry cleveland Jr.: the golf king, has kept his style throughout the years and makes you like it when he dances.
Terry St. John: nice clean moves
Jazz: need I say more?
Poncho: another classic, he did the throwing up his sticks thing that everyone does now....way back when he was with the theatre. Stays new and moves stay nice and smooth.
Alot of Teen boys coming up that will be the new champs in thier time.
Fancy dancing is so exciting and always a crowd pleaser. The winners are always the ones who know how to work the crowd.

When goose mentioned Dwight in her story reminded me of something I saw this past spring at Haskell powwow. I talked with the family too after and got the rest of the details.

Dwight was the head men's judge at Haskell's spring powwow this past May. He was going to sponsor a men's fancy contest and turns out it was going to be an "ironman" contest. They had his special on Sunday after the regular contest. When Terry Fiddler spoke for Dwight, he had a long list of names of past fancy dance champions in chronological order (many of the names were dancers mentioned on this thread). There were a bunch of us that noticed that Joe Bointy's name wasn't on that list, but later we found out that Dwight asked Joe B to create that list so that's why Joe B didn't write his own name on the list. Terry said that all these fancy dance champions were dancers that Dwight admired. But then he said that one dancer in particular had been his biggest source of encouragement and inspiration and that dancer was one of Haskell's powwow co-chairs, Mr. Joe Bointy. He talked about how Joe had made one of Dwight's first set of bustles and how he had always encouraged Dwight and taught him many good things. He talked about how much Dwight respected Joe for everything he had accomplished in and out of the arena, and then he announced that Dwight was sponsoring that fancy dance special in honor of Joe Bointy.

I was glad to be there to see that, because you could tell the family was really surprised that Dwight was doing that, and it was very emotional. Terry called Joe's wife and family out to join Dwight and Joe, then Julius Not Afraid put a starquilt on Joe B. Dwight had White Tail sing an honor song, and the arena was full of people. It was one of nicest specials I had seen in a long time.

The contest itself was incredible! Most of us had never seen an "ironman" contest before and it was exciting. Patrick Spotted Wolf picked them off as they dancers got tired until only Spike Draper and Darryl Jack were left standing. 13 songs I think is what they danced to, until Spike eventually won it all.

The MC announced that Joe Bointy and his family will be sponsoring another "ironman" contest at the 2004 Haskell Spring powwow, and this time it is to honor Dwight Whitebuffalo.

I had alot of favorites before I got to see this special, but now Dwight and Joe B top my list of favorites. That was a class act from 2 top notch dancers and they get my vote for best fancy dancers.

I saw that special too. I have to agree that it was probably one of the classiest things I have ever seen between two of the top competitors in men's fancy. Joe and his family were very honored and surprised and touched by Dwight's gesture and it showed.

Thumbs up

I wish I could make it to Haskell to see that special this coming year! Thank you so much for sharing that story, Pow wow Pro. It is a reminder of how things should be: competitors can be the best of friends, and be willing to show it and share it with everyone else on the pow wow trail.

(I have never seen an Ironman contest. I have heard about a few of them.... they sound so exciting!)
