Black Indians Documentary as part of Native Film Series
Hey everyone, following event is already posted in nativegatherings, but I just wanted to give it a plug because I will be sharing my poetry to open the show. If you're going to be in L.A. next week, come on by. If you're from L.A., come on by it's been three years since I left and I want to hug your neck (oh goodness, Texas is rubbing off!)
Bringing the Circle Together: A Native American Film Series, Film Screening of Black Indians: An American Story Thursday, July 31, 2008 7pm Black Indians: An American Story Narrator James Earl Jones brings to focus a forgotten part of American history – the cultural and racial fusion of Native and African Americans. Black Indians: An American Story explores what brought the two groups together, what drove them apart and the challenges they face today. Scheduled discussion to follow screening with Valena Broussard Dismukes (Choctaw), author of The Red-Black Connection. Poet Asani Charles (Choctaw/Chickasaw) will open the show! Bringing the Circle Together: A Native American Film Series is a FREE monthly film series located in downtown Los Angeles at the National Center for Preservation of Democracy. No reservations are needed and all screenings are open to the public. The film series was established to provide quality documentaries and films by and about Native Americans, and bring together a central gathering place where discussion and news can be shared with the community and its supporters. The film series is held at the National Center for Preservation of Democracy located at 111 North Central Avenue, between 1st Street and Central Avenue, in downtown Los Angeles. The NCPD can be reached via train, bus, or parking in the area. Films will begin at 7pm, and it is advisable to arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior for seating. Each film will include a Free Raffle at the end of the screening, and may include guest speakers and performances when available. More information will be given, as it is provided. Yeah it's the same one. Valena Broussard Dismukes is the photographer who supplied many of the stills. She will also attend the screening for a panel discussion afterward
