All I can say that I found this link, I hope it helps you a bit...there is a list of awards and so on- his official site.
ShermanAlexie.com: The Official Site of Sherman Alexie All I read in English is "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven", others I read in German- and it is never the same to read a translation.... - what I read is not for tiny pupils *g* Good luck for tomorrow! |

Personally, I favor Reservation Blues. I didn't care for Toughest Indian in the World. Flight is still in my to read pile, so I don't have an opinion. And in this era of school shooting, Indian Killer may freak folks out.
If you're going to have to read an excerpt then try one of the short story poem collections: Tonto and the Lone Ranger, Summer of the Black Widows, One Stick Song, Ten Indians, or The Business of Fancydancing. A few of these collections feature some of his earlier work and I don't think they are as -- uh -- polished. So you might pick some later work that highlights his more mature prose. |

I have to agree Sherman Alexie is an amazing author, I'm a huge fan, so far I have to say Reservation Blues sticks out as one of his best, also First Indian on the Moon was a really good one to. He made a film out of the book The Business of Fancydancing, its a good movie, Evan Adams is in it. Really good movie.

OH NO...his early, what you call Unpolished...work, is so raw and real. Man, I just love his earlier work!!! To me, that just FEELS like its the real Sherman Alexie, before he had the chance to be influenced by critics and publishers, and other writing styles. Its very difficult to judge Sherman Alexie against Sherman Alexie. Its just a matter of what each reader takes from each work! |

Reservation Blues!
I love this book. I wish the problems with legal stuff could be worked out so he could go ahead and make a movie of it. I think it would be a great movie. I am glad for the other books mentioned. Time to read somethin by him again. I agree about the real and raw comment about his work. There's an honesty about the way he writes.
