Well bad new folks. I just got back from Hominy and Joyce Cass did past on. She died on Tuesday June 13. Leroy Cass is doing well and will still keep the store going. He even danced on Saturday night after four days of mourning. Still please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. (scarves $18 for two small scarves, big scarf and arm band ribbons to match)

Colors are very important in the creation of good ribbonwork. You see too many pastels out there. The colors should "zing." FlyingFringes is an excellent individual to ask these questions...the color combinations she uses on her ribbonwork are exquisite. She'll be gone for a week or so -- out dancing her little mocs off on that red earth -- but catch her when she returns.

My knowledge on ribbonwork is very limited. With that said, I understand that many designs are Osage family designs. Can anyone elaborate on this or give any info on it? Good question by the way.

If you want some first hand good information on meanings and designs on Osage ribbonwork, rawhide, beadwork...etc. Check on a book called
Symbolic and Decorative Art of the Osage People by Louis F. Burns. ISBN 0-942574-10-9 I met the author in Cody, Wyomming a few years ago. Very knowledgable Osage Indian, in his late 70? who wanted to put down this knowlege before it was lost. He goes into the symbolism of ribbonwork, colors and desgins. First main colors were red, blue, yellow and black or Navy blue. Pastels did not come in until this last century...1920s and on. Some designs have names, but not attributed to anyone family. Cradle boars are painted with a characteristic family design. tipis |
