Beaded Vest

I'm in the process of making my daughter her vest and attached yoke out of a homemade pattern. What I am having trouble with is I am afraid it will gap at the armholes. I made the pattern out of newspaper and when I try it on her it gaps. I like a fitted look, so it would have to fit the curves, but was wondering if I really should put small darts in it or not. :dontknow: When I put the darts on the pattern it did not lay flat then. Soooo I am wondering if that would make it more difficult to bead??? We have thought about doing the applique` stitch but I am afraid that would make it even more obvious! :Help :wall:

EEK!! what a question...I'll call someone Iknow who makes them and ask them...but I dont' see why it would be harder to bead with the darts in....

Paper patterns are nortorious for not fitting proper. Try making a mock vest out of old sheets to get the fit right. Then use the mock to cut the pattern out of what ever material you are using. good luck.

Good thing you are thinkin' about this now..........instead of after you have the vest finished!! :D

I would definately make sure the pattern fits your daughter BEFORE you start any beadwork. I never have beaded over darts, but I don't see why that would make a difference in how your beadwork would lay.

I am trying to picture this....

Where at the armholes are the gaps happening? At the back, over the shoulderblades?

Will the vest be fully-beaded?

Ok..... Yes it will be fully beaded.

The gaps appear at the front of the arm hole above where the breasts are. While she is not large she is not flat chested either. That is why when I made the darts on the paper it made, for lack of a better term..... "cone shaped elevations" :p and that is why I was wondering if it would make a difference in the beading of it.

Good idea about the moc sample! I completely forgot about that!

"cone shaped elevations"... I love it! Reminds me of Madonna! :p

Experiment a little with the slope of the shoulders. Sometimes this can effect the armhole. Otherwise, try the darts. I've never tried darts with beadwork but don't see why it wouldn't work.

Guess I'm not much help.......

I agree with checking the slope of the shoulders. Increase it on the front, and not necessarily on the back (unless it puckers a little there)

You can curve your darts a little, too, so you don't end up with the Madonna things. Curve it towards the fold, so you end up with a "claw" shaped dart - very tapered at the end.

Beading over it will soften the "points" a little.

:Idea

Perhaps your daughter could use a laser level to make a relief map of her personal contour for the pattern? That way you (theoretically) get a perfect fit!

Are you having the vest go on the back too? You should just do the front, and have some strips that attatch in the back. With the vests that go all the way around, it tends to get hot. That's how I had my red regalia, my new one is just the front. Here's a pic of it half way sequined...nevermind, I cna't get it on here, lol. I'll just e-mail you the pic.

Vest

Make your pattern, and make the darts. Sew it up just as you would want it. Figure out where the material wasn't exposed to the right side. Pick the seams that sewed the darts, and any seams that keep your pattern from laying flat. (Things are much faster to bead if you can lay them out flat. ) You usually get a creased edge, use this as a guide. Using those creases, you can see that there is a side that is tucked under the fabric, now it is a matter of not beading in this area. It's very simple really. You can bead up to this line. Watch it as you bead so that your beads match up across the dart gap. I hope that this isn't just a babble and that it will help you with your project
