I need some directions on how to do fabric and/or ribbon applique for a new outfit. I have been told to use the same material that womens fancy dance dresses are made of.

I have also read somthing in the archives about Wonder Under and interfacing but still don't have a clue.

A good place to start will be your local library or fabric/craft store. Look for quilting instruction books that focus on machine (rather than handsewn) applique. There you will find the basic steps outlined better than I could ever explain them here. Most quilters use cotton although the same interfacing and sewing techniques can be used with satin, tafetta and other fabrics. Practice with scraps first. Stick with large, simple geometric designs in the beginning until you get the hang of it. Good luck!

Wyat, the book mentioned is about the best info on the market right now. Chec it out and if you have more detailed questions you could email me with them later. I've tried to help RW get started, but he is having a little trouble because some things you just have a hard time explaining but it is so simple when you see it done. For example, explain to someone how to tie shoes over the phone.. it's simple but hard to explain. I am going to make a simple how to video in the near future, This will be a home done how to video for folks, not a made for money thing and if I make a couple copies maybe I could send you one. Of course RW is going to yell at me and tell me he has dibs, and he would if he would EVER SEND ME THE RIGHT EMAIL ADD TO REACH HIM AT! Any way I degress. Ribbon work is not hard to do but it is the putting together of many little steps to get the finished product. If one step is just 1/8" off, it won't work. So , get the book and give it a shot. When it doesn't work, you have two options, call me or mail boucoup dollars to your favorite ribbonmaker! Have fun and be patient for it to work! Later! :D

Thank you for your help. I'll see what my local library has and also see if anybody around has that book. I've been informed that a couple of people locally do this type of work, hopefully they will teach me.

Thanks again for you help. My local library has books and video's which cover basic machine applique. I also learned how to sew a quilt.

My next step is to visit the local fabric store to find good colors of fabric.

A very good material to use is taffeta but it is getting harder and harder to find. The taffeta with the wavy watermark thru it is very beautiful, but I've been told that they are going to stop making it so if you run across some and you like the colors, it might be wise to pick it on up. Remember in color selection that the contrast is more important than the actual color. I've heard of some color combos that sounded just terrible, but when you see the completed ribbons they are just outstanding. If you throw in a color that just absolutely doesn't go with the combo, I bet you will be pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it will look. Don't ask me why, it just does. A famous ribbon maker told me that one time and I found it hard to believe but it really works! Good luck with your project. I hope they come out as beautiful as you hoped! Ha...there's lots you guys don't know. Maybe it's in my genes my Granny was a seamstress after all. I learned how to make a quilt by watching a video and reading about machine applique. Unfortunatly for me my wife dosent know how to use a sewing machine or at least that's what she claims. Otherwise I'd have her do all this stuff. My mom just raised me too well and taught me too much.

I use "WONDER UNDER" it makes my life so much easier. You could also use pellon but that dont stick as well. Wonder under is too easy all ya have to do is go to a fabric store and ask for it the directions are self explanitory. :D
