hi all ya happy people:D
well im on a new project here...im lookin to make a fully beaded vest..
what kind of material would you use?
im lookin to make an x-large one...so how many sq ft would that be? and how many hanks of beads would i use? what size of beads would i use? what kind look better bugle or czech?
i know alot of questions...

That's going to be one heavy vest, I tell you. Are you beading onto leather or onto fabric? To find out the area of your vest, you'd have to actually cut it out first.

I guess whatever background you choose, or backgrounds, you had better make sure you get enough beads so the colors won't 'shift' slightly. It's better to have leftovers anyways, for touchups later on.

I beaded the yokes of several western shirts for some people, and including the collar points and cuffs. Made the shirts heavy for sure!

hey,
for alot of my beadwork i use duck cloth. you can get it in any fabric store. all it is is a light wieght canvas. but it really strong.

i'd say the best material to start out with is cash so you can pay someone else to do it for you!

I'm making a vest, and I can say it takes a lot of patience... I found an old vest that I didn't wear anymore... no need in reinventing the wheel fellas.... I drew out my designs on the vest and went from there. I'm about 1/4 of the way through. I find, that everytime you sit down to do beading, set a goal... Either finish a pattern, a lane, or some element, so you feel like you've accomplished something... Its working for me... Anyway, I'm not beading the back just yet, because I don't think theres any point in it, because my bustle is going to cover it up...

I (and several other's) beaded my son's traditional outfit, which includes a vest. Defintely buy enough bead's so that the colors match. I bought 2 kilo's of the background beads, and I am a little short for the last few small pieces. But that did the vest, the breachcloth, the side drops, cuffs, arm bands, and leg bands in a man's size. I use a material that doesn't fray. It is a little heavier, but it will maintain without fraying out and that is a lot of work for it to fall apart under heavy dancing! I use either ultra suede with a backing or, (I can't remember the real name for it but it is used for table top protection). I use a regular vest pattern from the store and get whatever amount of material it calls for. I think that cut beads look the best. I used a combo of size 10 cuts for the design, and translucent's for the background. It really makes the design stand out. If you have the time use smaller beads if you are going to use a more detailed design.
