Bill, Blackbear does raised beadwork. I don't know if it is the same style you are talking about.

raised bead work

Here's what we've discussed so far... I combined three threads into one so that's why it kinda does'nt make sense in some places. This topic comes up about, oh.... every 4 to 5 months... so I just combine them... So what do you want to know about it.?

that raising is done by beading over a line of beads... that's the only way I can explain it right now.

http://www.powwows.com/gathering/att...&postid=192795 I am not sure if this shows the pic or the thread...but if it's the thread...find my post with the Glengarry attachment... this is just the top of the hat I have been working on ...this part is done. Also if you want to see lots of good examples of iroquois raised beadwork, then go to ebay and search for Iroquois beadwork or whimseys.

here is another good link

oh you have an OLDDDDD piece... they used moose hair... but that was usually for embroidery style of decoration... horsehair works just as good.. even some deer tail would work. Just use the hair as the line of beads and bead over it.

you do know though...that if this is something you are collecting, that repairing it lessens it's value. These pieces were made for tourists back in the victorian period. They are actually big time collectors items. I have an old tuscarora box/bag that I got off ebay that's over 100 years old. It sits on my mantel.
