It's kind of like having Morongo pow wow and calling the winner of the Men's Fancy dance, the WORLD CHAMPION of FANCY DANCE. It doesn't really fly. Basically the Hoop dance thing is just a very large money making endeavor for the museum. |

But still just to be able to say you competed there is pretty good. If somebody else were to have it and then have a really good payout then they would get the best hoop dancers. I still think that to even have a special championship for hoop dancing is pretty good. I don't understand why we need to make this event something less because it makes money or somebody else has difficultie with it being at a museum. You call down both the hoop championships and Morongo and yet you don't offer an alternative.

Well, all hoop dancers are eligible to go so if they choose not to attend then it's their own fault. This contest was set up to bring the best hoop dancers together to see who's the best. If someone else, not in attendance, truly is the best but choose not to show up, then the ones who do show up shouldn't be punished with the moniker of "World Champion only because Joe Schmo didn't show up". This is a very nice event. Yes, I'm sure it makes money for the museum, but all large Indian events these days charge admission (Schemitzun, Gathering, etc.) so what's the point?

Yeah for Daniel Tramper!!!!
and to all the other's that placed!!! But Daniel is a hometown guy so have to congratulate him!!!! Like Wojapi said, if someone chooses not to go compete then those that show up should not be faulted... It is only Hoop Dancers no powwow comp to worry about... If you win gold at the olympics are you not an olympian? same with Hoop Dance at Heard - it's become the standard and place for the best to meet and compete! |

Well, since NONE of y'all live in Phoenix, Az, and have probably never been to this event, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt...HOWEVER,
This is not a big INDIAN event, i.e:Schemitzun, Gathering, this is a show for the non native world in the guise of a contest. Last time I checked, it was THE biggest money making event for the Heard Museum. And to get to the olympics, one has to compete several times and officially be the Best of the Best. My point with the hoop dance is that there is nothing "official" about it. You show up, you sign up and you dance. What if there are other hoop dancers out there in the world who are very, very good and can't afford to travel to Phoenix, pay for accomodations, etc. to compete? No, the dancers who show up shouldn't be punished because they could afford to come, but they shouldn't be rewarded either with a bogus title. AND YES, I've been to the hoop dance contest, I know most of the dancers AND most of the singers!! I don't have anything against them, I'm attempting to point out how, once again, the Heard Museum has profitted from the gifts of the Native American. |

My point is, yes there are other hoop dance contests, but this one was established as the World Championship. I haven't attended every pow wow that has hoop dance contests, but the World Championship at the Heard has far more hoop dancers than I've ever seen compete at a pow wow. As far as it being a bogus title, then I guess everyone who won at Schemitzun received a bogus title too? I sort of look at Heard the same way I look at White Eagle (home of the World Championship Fancy Dance Contest)...they were the original homes of the World Championships for their particular style of dance and that's where it should stay. If people want that title, then save your pop cans and make the trip. P.S. One of the people directly involved in establishing the hoop dance championship at the Heard is on this board...wonder when he'll poke his head in? ![]()
