Hi there;

I am not sure what you mean by "dancing Ojibway". Please elaborate. As for beadwork, traditionally Ojibways used floral designs on white background or black wool. Do a search on Google and you will be able to find pictures on Ojibway floral beadwork. Best of luck.

Do you know anyone from Red Lake that can help you? I am not familiar with Cloth Dancing and wish I could provide more information. I still recommend that you research through various search engines and/or a library.

Best to find a Red Laker who can help but I do have some photos of historic pieces to give you a basic start. You can do either a wool or velveteen dress or blouse and skirt combination. The skirt or dress can be beaded in the unique floral style the Ojibwe are known for. If you want to do the earliest style of cloth dress then you might want to look into the strap dress which has detachable cape-like sleeves. I believe there is a rough pattern of one in the book Aunishinawbe Sketchbook by Sheryl Hartman. Let me go look for photos....

Some pictures of museum pieces...

The first is from the American Museum of Natural History and is a legging done in the older geometric style.

The second pic is a fabulous vlack velvet beaded skirt.

one more

a final pic....

Oh, the skirt I posted above is in the Billings Airport collection.

This pic is a really elaborate dress with all the accessories. From National Museum of the American Indian.

My understanding is that each Ojibwe band had its own subtle differences in beadwork so please use these pics as a generic basis only.

Years ago you could identify family differences in beadwork as well. Not so much anymore...

Do a search on Ojibwe style clothing, we used ribbon work as well, just not as much as Potawatomi and Winnebago.
