Dance Fans

A new question to ponder, is it appropriate to make flat fans out of Macaw feathers? Since the Native American Church uses them for spiritual reasons.

I am not recognized and I have been told by some dancers that it's a better alternative to eagle.

Mex,

I'm not NAC either. I have been to a few meetings but I don't consider myself a member.

The next fan I make is going to be macaw.

Awhile back there used to be a lot of anhinga (waterbird) and scissortail fans in the southern dance arenas. Nowadays, everyone prefers eagle feathers.

*L There was a time - not too long ago - when "most" traditional women or children DID NOT carry eagle feather fans.

Hmmmmmm?

I would assume since you posted in this forum you are a lady dancing cloth....if that is the case, I would say the answer to your question is yes it is appropriate. I have made macaw fans for ladies who dance in every catagory besides fancy shawl. I have also made fans for men who straight dance and gourd dance.

I'm still waiting to see a contemp tradish man carrying a macaw fan. Has anyone already seen someone doing it??

I am a Golden Age women's traditional dancer and I have a macaw fan. I love it!! The bright colors match my regalia.

Daryl, I have seen your bead work and it is beautiful. My daughter Maya dances with one of your fans when she dances traditional. She is usually a old style jingle dancer.
