Wrong beat?

Have you ever started on the wrong beat and you were going down while everyone else was going up, in a contest?

What did you do?

THIS IS THE WORST!!! you just have to get on beat...it can be tuff, but you gotta do that wierd stutter step to get back on beat. HAHAHA! (i know you gals know what i'm talkin about) There were times when i just continued to dance right through it & didn't switch at all.

my dad always told me that Crow style doesn't dance on beat but in contest you have too.

One thing that really drives me crazy is when the drum switches the honor beats in a round dance song during contest. the first one everyone is on beat, the 2nd one is different so everyone scrambles to get on beat & then the 3rd is different again....it's frustraiting! thankfully the judges catch on & will sometimes give us another song

I hate to admit it, BUTT there have been times when I'm dancing along, and a darned drum messes up an honor beat. I've gotten pretty good at fixing it before anyone can notice. I've even team danced with my daughter, whom I'm still teaching and can most of time get back in step with her, if she has lost track. Its all part of it; dressing up appropriately, listening well to the songs and really dancing your best.

Oh yea you wait all winter to get out and dance...

and you get a speaker system that has a crazy echo so all you hear when the drum starts is a goofy padung padung padung and you try to dance with that beat.

That happen to me, and I tried and tried to find the real beat through the song. After the honor beat I caught it but then I was on the opposite side from the drum and all I could hear again was the padunnnng padunnng padunng that didn't sound right. I wanted to just walk off. lol But I just said oh heck, and tried to finish up the song. I appologize to the ladies who might have been thrown off behind me, but then I'm wondering what did you hear?? lol Maybe I need to get my hearing checked? Naw....I know next time I will try to start near the drum when its a big arena and not so good system.

That was embassing to be in, but funny and keeps ya humble. lol

I get off beat sometimes (not alot) in inter-tribals because of different reasons. 1). Sometimes a drum might switch beats ( meaning they speed up the beats and then slow them down). 2). Sometimes you have people out there who don't usually dance (spectators or people who just can't dance) that dance in front of you and they throw you off. I usually try to look another direction and not pay attention but it's very difficult to do so!. and 3). My mind is wandering and I'm not paying attention (probably cuz I might have seen someone in the audience selling meat pies.. aye.. lol).

I had to LOL because this happened to me recently. The woman in front of me was doing a step-touch-step touch thing and bobbing her head. It threw me waaay off. I kept trying to focus higher but it was tuff!

I also get thrown off when the intertrtibal gets chatty...

I was a MIW contestant several years back. During the dance competition, my group was given a northern song. I usually have no problem with dancing to a northern song, but when it came time to compete, it was a different story. I thought I heard an honor beat, so I went down, but when I came back up, I actually heard the real honor beat. Needless to say, I was embarrassed. I would blame the noise down on the floor at GON, but who knows.

I step pretty high when I dance so it's hard to do the stutter step to fix it. Sometimes I just have to finish out what I started. My peave is when the drum can't hold a beat and changes mid song or their song isn't sync with the drum. I don't compete anymore. I just dance when I can and I love it!

The best thing to do, is to practice so you never watch other dancers. I get in my ZONE when dancing; and in my head I'm the only dancer and I'm doing the best dance I can, because I'm honoring what my grandmothers have handed down to me. It was their gift to me, the knowledge of being close to my creator when I participate in dancing, drumming and singing. Even when I'm beading, sewing or attempting basket work, I feel close to them and my creator.

I've done it once or twice. It's really easy for me to fix it quickly without anyone having taken notice.

Guilty. Sometimes it's me and sometimes it's the drum. Usually I can get back on beat without anyone noticing too but if you get off beat you still need to enjoy the song you're dancing to, especially in competition.
