shawl fringe

Hello,
my name is michelle and i am currently working on my first shawl after 8 years of personal turmoil, and self hate. with the past year of soul searching my dreams and my grandma's lead me back to dancing. after 8 years you can only imagine how out of place and rusty you can become. especially in my place i tried to forget everything i ever knew because i was ashamed, but i am no longer. my shawls were made for me by my grandmothers, but they have long passed away. with hours of meditation and listenin to my dreams the have lead me back. they told me to make a shawl and go to the honor day celebration. this gives me little over a month to make my shawl. i know to use gabardine, and i know the length, but i'm having trouble with the fringe... as in, what type of material i should get, i'm trying to be respectful and open as possible because i am pretty wounded by the past 8 years of my life but i'm trying to turn that all around now and get back to my roots that made me happy. I want to go to the celebration and have a feeling of belonging. i asked my auntie who will be a speaker, and she just winked and told me my grandma's will tell me. if anyone can help me. i'd appreciate it. either with a reply to the post, or with an email.
thank you, love and respect to all~michelle

Michelle,

You've already made the choice to come back, nothing else really matters. Leave your past in the past, it's done an over with.

We're happy to see ya :)

Depending on what type of shawl your making, you either want satin ribbon which you can get at any faberic store...

or:

The long-time favorite for traditional dancers has been Chainette Fringe. Chainette usually comes in 14" pre cut strips so its easy to handle. I highly doubt you can find this for a decent price at your local fabric store, however, lucky for you, you can order it online here in 18" lenghts:

Shawl Fringe - Spool Fringe for Native American Indian Dance Shawls: Crazy Crow Trading Post

Or if you want the old school 14" Lenght, it's availiable here:

Chainette Fringe- 18" Chainette Fringe- Native American Indian Dance Shawl Fringe: Crazy Crow Trading Post

You can also buy a GREAT big spool, and spend countless hours cutting and measuring! That's right here:

Shawl Fringe - Spool Fringe for Native American Indian Dance Shawls: Crazy Crow Trading Post

The spool will save you 6-10 bucks, but add precious time to making your shawl.

Make sure you pick up a bottle of "Fray Chek" at the fabric store to keep the ends of your fringe from coming apart.

I wish ya the best of luck, and welcome back...

Just remember, nobody judges you for what you've done in the past, including the creator, they judge you for who you are today. So make that be the best you can!

Welcome Home.

I made my first real shawl as I call it this spring. You will know what you need for your shawl when the time comes. You will find if you listen Your shawl will speak to you in it's own way. It took me some pretty frustrating hours to figure that out. Welcome home, hope to meet you on the Pow wow trail sometime.

I am glad you are returning to the Circle! It can be a very healing place. And welcome to this forum. You will learn a lot here.

Steffan Redhawk pretty much summed up the choices you have for fringe material. If you use satin ribbon, you can use whatever width you like although 1/4", 3/8" and 5/8" widths seem to be most common. The 1/4" stuff is found on little 10-yard spools at most craft and fabric stores and WalMart. This width you can either tie on individual fringes by hand or you can sew them on. The wider ribbons are normally sewn on. They are most economically purchased in 100 or 300 yard spools. This place has a wide array of colors...

Have fun making your shawl!

I found some flat ribbon yarn at Walmart that is pretty light weight, but soooo nice in the colors. I initially got it for my sons grass dance outfit, but I used ONE 5 dollar spool and made myself a shawl that echoes his outfit. I'm going to make one for my mom and my daughter, since its so inexpensive. The ribbon is thin and pliable enough to use an embroidery needle and pulls easily through any fabric. I usually find good things and go YAAY, but this time, this is a DOUBLE YAAYYAAY!!!

flat ribbon yarn at WalMart?

What section did you find it in? What's the brand name?
