just finished hairties, choker, choker drop, and my crown. Still gotta make some big satellite earrings (ayyeee) and maybe a drop.
Then I gotta put my new sewing machine to use and make a couple of matching outfits. can't wait to wear everything... |

Old Skool
Me, personally I'd LOVE to see more Old school traditional southern outfits. Which means, no bright colors, sequins, flourescents, crowns, sparklies, etc. I started dancing in 96 and at that time only southern buckskin dancers wore crowns, nowadays everyone and their mother has a crown. It's not original anymore!!!
On the "traditional" thing, It would be great to see more old school outfits in primary colors and designs representative of a person's tribe or family. And what about using a real, WHOLE dance shawl on the arm instead of those fake, 1/4 size shawls with ribbon hanging off of them? When I learned how to dance, I was told that my purse, shawl fringe, drop and finger weaving should all sway gracefully, lately I'm hard pressed to find southern cloth dancers who are 'graceful' let alone dancers who have all 4 of those items on their outfit. |

I am going to have some embroidery work done on my arm shawl and drop to match my broadcloth skirt. I am also thinking about having some new leggings made. I'll probably have a couple more shirts made as well. Also, I am beading a choker and choker drop to match my crown/hairties.
I can't answer for everyone else but the reason why I prefer an arm shawl vs. a full size folded shawl is because when I dance the full size folded shawl bunches up on my wrist and doesn't look or swing right. The arm shawl lays just right on my arm. I don't think there's anything wrong with using it. Why use a full size shawl if I'm dressed in my regalia? |
