Gangster of Love
![]() |
I've just heard em called Ho Chunk applique' that I can remember. Was at Winnebago several years back. The MC kept announcing " Hoooooo Chunk Appliiiiiiiiiiiiiqqqqqqqquuuuuuuue'. I'm thinkin it was Merle Tendoi.
Anway...... I love watchin the ladies..... especially the ones doin it right. Oh muh damn...... takes a LOT of stamina and grace to really do it right. I my self love seeing the different styles........ and love seeing them in separate categories.

are those those jumping girls?
Are you talking about those girls who jump with their feet together??? I saw some girls who did that at Crow Fair. I'd never seen that before. Also, they wore their applique off to one side instead of straight up and down the middle. Where are those girls from???

Those girls are from Wisconsin. And the applique worn off to the side represents different things such as if it's off to the left that means that they're married and/or has kids and if it's off to the right it means that they aren't married or has kids. I guess that's neat to. But that's what they explained to me when i first met them during the summer. And the way they dance is supposed to represent how humble they are and if you watch them there feet never leave the ground. But yes! it is very beautiful to watch--Just like crow's have crow style. The Ho-Chunks have Ho-Chunk Applique. But alot of the people out there in the mid-west say that there is more up in coming apllique dancers coming up soon or something like that. But i cant wait to see some more scrubbers. Oh yeah, the girls also said the whole washboard thing that one lady dances with, is taking it way out of hand. And that every part of there outfit represents a different thing and before you can dance applique you would have to know and explain every piece of outfit that they have on!
Sounds to difficult for me to dance but i asked them to help me so i can write my paper for school. And that helped alot to talk to them about it. They were more than willing to help and they're very nice people to get to know.

Keen!
Yeah I saw them at Crow Fair this past year. I was gonna go up and tell her that her dress was on crooked, but then I noticed that they all wore theirs that way! I don't think I've ever seen any dancers like that down Oklahoma way, but then again, the only Ho-Chunk I know is Thorpe Sine. Was really cool to see. I think it's great that more tribes are dancing true to their style!

Thanks for sharing the information...I appreciate that. It does sound like a difficult dance, especially having to explain every part of the outfit. But then again, I remember my grandmother telling me something like that before when I was young...to be prepared to explain the parts of my outfit when necessary. I'm part Ho-Chunk on paternal side and I'm hoping to one day learn more about my people up that way! I was raised in WY most of my life & had very little knowledge of my paternal side until recently. I have children now & I feel that things like the dances are just one of the many important things for them to learn. I keep thinking to myself that maybe some day one of my daughters will dance the dance...that would be awesome!
