...well ladies..I wear my hair straight down. :Thumbs It is down to my knees and all one length..no bangs.
I wear one beaded barrette in the back with my plumes which has four colored ribbons that hang down to add color to my hair. I also wear 4 small plumes to the left of my eye that hang down....
My husband just "melts" when he sees my hair gently swaying along as I dance. :Eyepopper
On HOT :( days at the summer powwows then it all goes into braids :p

The hair braiding come from the same place as the shawl on one or the other arm says you are married or not. Same for the hair feather placement. And on, and on, and on, and on.

heart braid

Hello,
someone asked how to do a heart braid, and i know how to do it i thought i would share :)
start by parting your hair in to two sections (just like you would normaly) then you divide those two sections into two, just above the ear. depending on the location you want your heart to start is where your going to want your seperations to be. (make sence yet?) Then i start the braid in the first section corner on the head (+) <-your looking at the back of the head.
i usally stand beside the person, or in front braid the hair up then gradually curve it around then back twards the middle. i usually braid it out to the end of the hair then tie it. then do the other side. then i unty both sides and go back to the end of both sides and then join them together. give it a try a few times before you go and display your work in public.:Chatter

Oh, also someone said something about having frizzies when they braid their hair. Normaly my sister has her hair put back when its wet so it breaks as it dries leaving her with a halo when her hair is braided. i found that the slick works by paul mitchell works wonders to keep it from doing that. you use a pea sized amount and you can add more or less depending you your hair. It holds her hair all day and she usally sleeps in it too. then she has crimped hair untill she washes it out. You can buy a cheap version of slick works at Sally Beauty Supply for about half the price that you would pay at the salon.

"oh! black whats this deal with one braid because your married. I've been around for long time, and seem to know a lot, but not all. where did this come from? I just think some times people just make up stuff. what tibe is this a tradition of, please feel me in. I don't think i have ever heard anything like that. I know some tribes have tradition on other things to do with hair, but wearing one braid cause your married get real. all i'm saying if people don't know facts, please don't practice. IT BAD ENOUGH OUR INDIAN PEOPLE ARE LOSING TRADITION, don't help by adding a little here and there. tired of seeing white folks trying to be indian so bad, for example: Look at what we are all going through with or religion NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCH. all i saying is don't over step your boundries. sure its nice to welcome other race into the circle, my opion big mistake that was done long time ago by somebody? Nothing agains other race, and i'm not saying all do, but for most. just my thoughts. I'll be around if anyone has a thought to share."

Uh...could you be any more rude???? Excuse me but I am Tuscarora...I did'nt MAKE this up...traditionally Iroquois women wore two braids parted down the middle if they were unmarried..and married women wore one braid doubled up and tied with a ribbon.... You could have asked me a little nicer, but there's your answer.

Wow! We had a little hair debate didn't we? Well, I usually wear my hair in two corn row braids. I've been braiding mine and other folks hair since I was a kid, so I braid my own. I'm married and also never heard about one braid. I wear it down or in one braid if I wear my Chickasaw Stomp Dress to allow for the ribbon drag that hangs from the beaded barrette.

hey, not our category, but i heard that jingle dress dancers are supposed to wear their hair in one braid to signify their allegiance and prayers for their tribe. anyone heard that?

Miss Nishnab, I also know some girls that just put a little hair conditioner on their dry hair before braiding it. It makes it a little slicker and keeps it from making it frizzy when it is taken down.

Hey Dawn, I know what you mean about not being able to braid -- Sparrow used to braid my hair upside down (I used to bed my head over), she would start at the neck and do it to go out on Saturday night and it would stay all night. You sure don't have to worry about pushing hair out of your face.

HAPPY EASTER ALL!

I usually wear my hair pulled back in one barette and in two braids. Of course, when I am dancing jingle once again, I will have back in one long french braid.

Talking

In truth, it can depend on what part of the powwow it is!

For instance...

First Day - first session - just arrived - grand entry: a put up do' with a barette to hold things up long enough to get your number taken! *L

Contest time: Everything in your hair is exactly in place and you're "dressed to impress!"

*smile

okay here's my 2 cents .....LOL I wear mine in 2 plain ole braids with a small barrett a each side ,hair ties and and a feather clipped on the left side of my head (I'm married so it goes on the left)
but since my hair is on the thin side and to my waist and my hands are in bad shape that's the best I can do.....LOL have never thought to ask anyone at a powwow to braid for me.

I usually have my sister put my bangs and stuff into a beaded hair barrette (I have her do this cuz she does it tighter than I do) then I braid it myself (into 2 braids). Usually I don't wear bias tape around my braids but since I recently got my hair thinned out, I'll have tiny hairs popping out of them so I wrap with bias tape very tightly. Then I put in my hairties and wear my crown with plumes. Man, my hairs just rugged too! I have to spray a bunch of hairspray on it in order to make it lay down! lol..Gah, at Stroud powwow about 2 yrs. ago, I guess the heat got to it so my hair got all puffy and the dang barrette opened up and I had to hustle to put it back in and re-braid my hair.
