Other than hide what other materials has anyone seen used to make mocassins? I've seen cloth and beaded tennis shoes

I've seen them made out of almost anything. Cloth, Cheep suade, canvas, water/tennis shoes, and the traditional leather. Personally I prefer the traditional leather because that's what I was brought up to use. But now days leather can be expensive and people say the alternative is to go with other types of materials.

A friend of mine makes moccisons for sale, he uses
Deer,
Buffalo,
Elk
Havalena,
pigskin,
cow,
and combination of above, like a Havalena sole, with Elk tops. He says by using the harder leathers for the soles, they will last longer like hard sole mocs.

I have also seen, allegator mocs, and believe it or not, snake skin mocs .... to me that was bad medicine, but that person was crazy to begin with.

I buy my buckskin at www.hideandfur.com it is priced real well and they have a lot of other items for sale. Whole hides are the cheapest and come in different grades from grade a to d. :flowers:

I like to bead on two layers of canvas with a paper backing.....a zigzag stich holding the layers together than trim them and use good old leather for the bottoms.....preferably moose hide(tougher).....than i put the finishing touches(tongues, edges,etc)
