Dirty little secrets...
Okay, so I can tell by some of you that ya'll contest. I also can tell by the last thread that some peeps have up to three shawls for one outfit! lmao...that just seems nuts. Anyways, my question is....do ya'll pin your shawls??? I do but I haven't found a good way to yet. I mean, mine's okay but I have seen some that look really good and they keep together soooo good. So what gives?? How does everyone else pin their shawls??? If you do pin them.....

wellllllllllllllll lets seeee.. on my daughters sahwls she stilll likes the full shawls not the half.. dont swing as well.. but she does like them pinned so they dont roll as easy....We use a big fat diaper pin.. and only pin the inside folds together... :)

No I don't pin; but I should, the only trouble is I use my granny's old wool shawl and I'm worried about putting any sharp object through it. It's full size, so I'm often having to refold, so it looks nice and straight on my arm.

I also use the large pins. I usually pin the folds together at each corner but under the material so nobody can see the pins! My sister on the other goes a little happy with the pins but I have to admit that her shawl does stay flat and sways good!!

*L im gonna expose one of my secrets.. but i dont think its dirty hahaaa... for the half shawls or lighter shawls.. use those curtain wieghts. You can just sew em into the hem or edges and no one can see em.. give ya the wieght for the swing ya want. *grin*

For my daughter I sew her's over. Just a stitch on each side but she's little and doesn't always hold her shawl. For mine I pin it in place so that when it's time to dance I jsut slip my arm through and go.
I like to use a heavy material on the bottom of my shawl designs so that it is a little stiffer.

Well................I do this. On my gaberdine shawls, I pin the corners, on the underside, and then I pin the part that folds over my arm to my blouse to hold it in place. That way I don't even have to move my arm or worry about my shawl at all. I hate to see cloth dancers that move thier arms to make their shawl move, it's all in the body.
Now, I have moved to broadcloth and gave my gaberdines to my daughters. So, with broad cloth, I sew it so it stays even, but still pin the shawl to my blouse. The broadcloth is heavy enough to take care of itself on the swing, but I don't like for it to slide since I use sparkle satin for my blouses(for now, you guys know me....I am liable to change my mind soon). Now, I am a perfectionist on my outfits, ask my seamstress(Luvstraightdancers), so everything has to match and be made out of the same material. I don't cheat on materials on that score. On my last set, we had to improvise a little here and there, but it came out okay. In fact, it was pretty awesome and it felt good in the arena(sounds questionable, huh?LOL) I am very, very strict on my regalia style and very old school in my beliefs. But even I have to use safety pins once in awhile. Sometimes, if I don't like the swing....I will pin a roll of nickels or fishing weights to even it out, but you didn't hear that from me. ha ha |

My shawl...
My 3 Cloth Dresses Are All Broadcloth, And Yes, My Shawls Are Pinned. Generally Broadcloth Holds Its Shape On Its Own Really Well But The Material Weighs It Down Too. Also Since My Shawl Is Made From Broadcloth, It Can Be Sized So Its Not So Bulky, But Still Swings Good!

Hmmm...
The Only Thing That Has Really Worked For Me Was To Take In My Dress Around The Waist By Way Of Darts. My First Dress Was A Suprise So It Was A Little Off My Exact Measurements But With A Little Measuring And Some Darts (Which, Consequently Are Covered Nicely By My Belt And Breastplate) Make It Fit. Even My 2nd And 3rd Dress Which Were Measured To Me Have Darts To Form A Little Bit More Distinct Shape.
Hope That Helps! |
