Gon
Well, I just returned last night from Albuquerque and it was pretty fun. The cloth category was not as big as it usually is, but it was still one of the bigger categories.
1st Alva Fiddler 2nd Lisa Little Iron (previously Ford) 3rd Sunny Rose Yellowmule 4th Sharon Brokeshoulder 5th Buffy Simmons We only had to dance one song each night and they both were southern songs. Which was kind of unfair to the northern cloth dancers, but they did really well. Amber Old Horn was awesome. The ladies who won danced really well. Buffy was smooth, and she just had a baby 5 weeks ago. (to be young again LOL) Overall, it was not a hard pow wow, just long and drawn out. but that is always the case at GON. See everybody at Marksville or Red Earth!!! |

Remember a few months ago, GON sent out announcements and flyers and stuff warning all the northern buckskin dancers they wouldn't be allowed to compete if they had cloth bottoms? Well it raised this huge stink and p.o'ed a bunch of people. So, GON in their infinite wisdow just lumped those ladies in with the Southern Cloth girls.
No it's not fair...gathering obviously should have broken the n and s cloth into different categories...afterall they have n and s buckskin broken out. But, gees, that would cost 'em more contest money RIGHT? Anywayyyyyyys, I'll get off my soapbox...I just don't go anymore. BOO hoo!!!!!! |

In contests where northern and southern styles are combined, do you think northern women who have fringe like a buckskin dressed dancer, has a better chance of winning?
What I have observed is regardless of how good you are, if you are actively travelling throughout the international powwow circuit, you have a better chance of placing high than someone who doesnt' travel. To me that sort of penalizes competitors who maintain the responsibility of raising families, maintaining a steady job or going to school. What do you think? WhoMe i agree with you. Kinda like out of sight out of mind.. If you are doing your daily thing and the good powwow's come and go and you miss them, does it make you a bad dancer.. no... you were placing like crazy before and now you watch the new ones placeing everywhere... :) but is so with alot of things.. solution? try going to as many as you can.. :)

Regarding your observation, I think that is accurate and yes it does penalize those of us that have steady jobs and can't be travelling or be seen all the time. That has happened to me, but then again sometimes I still do good even though I don't travel so much. Right now I probably won't get to travel much at all because I just got permanent custody of my toddler granddaughter, so we're sticking closer to home. |

Well back when i was dancin southern cloth.. i would rather dance against the n. cloth than any buckskin dancers. *L..
Its probably still the same, back then if there were s. bucks theyd place above the cloth. It was kinda a given.
