Cloth Dress Designs

I am making a new T-dress. I am looking for Choctaw designs for my T-dress. I have the diamonds, and half diamonds. But I need to find the one with the spirals and a choctaw belt design.

I am combining my two tribes Oklahoma Chahta and Kiowa in a T-dress.
Anyone have any ideas?

My idea is to make a Choctaw dress and Kiowa dress without the combining, and I'll tell you why.

I'm not around Choctaws too much, and really don't know too many Choctaw family members, but I'm around Kiowas all the time and they can be VERY particular about the way people dress. You can try your idea, but you may experience your share of criticism, whether or not you know it.

Choctaw dresses are very pretty... you should take advantage of your right to wear one and get together the dress, the apron, and the collar. I'm dying to have one made myself, I just never get around to it.

After you have that, you can work on getting a Kiowa set together. Those dresses are much simpler to make.

Just my two cents though. :) I guess in the end, it's all up to you to decide what you want to wear. I just took the opportunity to give you a heads up.

Well, I agree with Ms. Kiowa...dont' mix them. they are two completely different tribes, customs, cultures, and traditions.
Make two separate dresses. Kiowas are pretty similar to Comanches when it comes to their regalia and pretty strict.
If you don't know this...you will find out the hard way.
Just a word of advice to keep feelings from being hurt. Be proud of your two tribes, but represent them separately in your dance regalia.

I have to agree. I have both a Kiowa T Dress and a Chickasaw dress. My mom is making me a Choctaw dress somewhere down the line. I add tribal touches subtley (sp?) with my beadwork. My purse has diamonds around the sides and I use tribal colors in my breastplate. Just some thoughts.

Kiowa/Choctaw Dress

A big thank you to all who replied on my dress. That is why I came to all of you....I don't want embarrass myself or cause any hurt feelings...I dance in a dk. blue T-dress with turquoise, red, white, yellow designs. I wanted to make another T-dress and thot I could do some combining, but I won't go there!

I'll make a new Choctaw dress, too. I know how to make the Chahta dresses. Since, I am new at tradish dancing and am adopted KIowa, but my Kiowa family do not dance so I need lots of help with ideas and what all to wear with my dress.

I do have another question, tho. Can I wear leggins with my dress that matches my designs on the dress?

I would like some advice on what goes with my T-dress. Thank YOu Yahakoke!

Wink

In m/o you should wear Kiowa Leggings with your Kiowa dress. You can use the colors of your dress in the beadwork but try to stick with traditional Kiowa leggings.

I remember a lady who is Cheyenne and Cherokee. On one day of a powwow she'd wear her cheyenne clothes and on the next day she'd wear a cherokee tear dress. i thought that was neat! That way she represented both of her tribes with out mixing one outfit together.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean... I'd think you would kind of want all your things to at least be color-coordinated, so in that case, you want to match in a way.

Actually, since Kiowa dresses are really simple (there really doesn't have to be any decoration on them at all), you may want to start by doing your beadwork. For example, I have mostly red/cobalt and white/aqua that go together and I'm starting to get green/yellow/red. Once you have the beadwork, it's a piece of cake to take that to the store and buy fabric that will bring out one or two colors in the beadwork.

And, yes, what yeeee (haha, I like that name) said, make sure you know what Kiowa leggings look like. There is little beadwork, which makes them a little of a pain to keep nice and white, but you deal. :)
