How do you start

When you are ready for a new outfit

do you have a design in mind?
colors?
material?
beadwork done?
given a shawl?
given an outfit?

how do you normally go about getting your next outfit together?

Personally I have no designs in my head- none(plus cant' sew worth a dime)

so i call on my lil sis she goes to work, and draws up some good stuff and then makes it so

I let my big sis design it and put the colors together. She'll ask me for my input but I just say that she's the expert. So then she'll go and pick the colors, and I'll buy the beads and then she'll kick it in gear.

My mom does all my colors and I have only one design I use.
My mom and I go to the fabric store and she starts ordering these ladies around and they start bringing all these colors out and she puts them together and she stands across the room and looks at them while I hold them together. It is an all day process.....she only uses two stores. Then we take it to our sewer, Luvsstraightdancers, and then there is a big long list of how she wants the colors reversed with the threads, the design reversed and then then luvs does the strips and my mom puts the outfit together and makes the skirt and all. Then the shirt is another matter. She likes sparkle satin for the shirts and so that has to be matched.
but when all is said and done, I get compliments whereever i go and people are lined up for her to do them an outift. She is 70 years old and doesn't do outfits for anyone but me and my neices and girls. So, I try to pay attention so I can see why she picks the color schemes she does. She says you have to see it, whether it shows up at a distance, and the colors show at night and day. Go figure.....

WHOA really?....I always did EVERYTHING Myself......Yes, that did include colors, designs, beadin', sewing and featherwork...Yall must be some lucky folks to have others to do some helpin'.

My southern fam, did seem to help each other out in different areas, like one would handle the sewing, the other with beadwork and such...That southern stuff seems complicated and detailed, Really pretty.:)

I've always done everything myself, (because I know how picky and what a perfectionist I am). The one time I asked someone to fill in a bag for me, I didn't like the way it turned out so I ripped it out and did it myself. When I am in the process of trying to find a design, colors, etc. I have to think about it for a long time before I finally get it and see it. I am working on my granddaughters outfit right now and am making her a fully beaded dress for when she gets a bit older. I plan on making her new beadwork for her until she learns how to bead and sew herself, but she will learn! I like to use dentallium shells so I always try to incorporate shells and floral work in my designs, which represents my Tribal affiliation). Other times I use animal designs because of their relationship to our names, symbology, etc. Anyway I don't want to be giving out all my secrets, (lol) but it does take a lot of time, prayer and cultural knowledge to design and make dresses, especially women's tradish.

My sister is a perfectionist too w/ her beadwork. She has a really keen eye for color so I just let her pick mine. My mom makes our dresses and hell, I don't really do anything. I just buy the beads and material.

I come up with the design and do all the beadwork. My mom does almost all the sewing.

My sister and I both bead and sew. I will come up with a design then I'll go and consult with her on the colors. She matches colors better than I do.
We both do her little ones outfits; that is why we haven't dance in over 2 years cause she has 4 kids (jingler, cloth, straight, and fixing to be a fancy shawl) and when we get done with one we have to start on another one; it can be a vicious cycle. We are planning on dancing again real soon. Luckily for me, my sister gave me a crown for Christmas so now I'm working on the accesories to it!!

NO, NO you can't sneak a pick!!!lol Naw, only a few has seen my crown (sister of course, me & my roommate)! I haven't shown anyone my beadwork and no one will see it until I "return to the circle" in may!!!! I was shocked when she gave it to me..........as she let go of it she said "now you have to start dancing again." I'm also feeling pressure from my 6 year old neice!!!! I make the kids listen to me so I guess it's only fair that I listen to them!!!LOL

I am the seamstress and beadworker (as far as powwows goes) in my family. I usually start out by finding the fabric that I like then start selecting the colors for the shawl, appliaque (msp), and beadwork.
