Does anyone know where I can get a good look at a Delaware/Lenape Dress? Understand I am in St. Louis, MO. I am part Lenape through the Anderson side of the family. The only picture I have of one is that of my great Grandmother wearing it and that picture is a really DARK photocopy of a photograph.:Mad Can hardly see anything.:Thinking So I don't have much to go on.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Is there a blanket or a shawl worn with it?
In the picture I remember seeing a lot of discs on the top. What are those? Broches?

Osiyo y'all,
There are a couple of good places that you can look at in the next couple of days. There's a book called, The Native People by Colin F. Taylor and William C. Sturtevant published by Smithmark. Also look for the video Elegant Visions by the Bartlesville Indian Women's Club. If your local library doesn't have these, you can get them brought in through an inter-library loan. The silver rings are brooches and are very visible in the photo in the book on page 226. They also have pictures of the shawls that were very distinct for the Delaware. Hope this helps. |

Whispering Winds Magazine had some pictures taken at the Delaware Homecoming from a year or so ago. I cant remember which issue, but I think it was in the fall of this year. If I remember correctly, there were several good pictures featuring womens dresses.

Here's an older-style dress. The ones around here look a little different now. No frillies at the bottom, the skirt is shorter and less full, short enough that the legging part is more dominant, but this is a good diagram anyway. http://www.jersey.net/~standingbear/lenidrs1.jpg If I find a better picture, I'll post a link. A have a couple of cousins who used to dress Delaware, but I'm not sure if there's any full length pics of their dresses. |

It's a wonderful picture of the blanket. Thank you. I am wanting to find a better picture of the dress underneath that as well.
Thanks for the link. I think there are more places that I need to look at there.

article
I have a copy of an article on Oklahoma Delaware Dance Clothes written by Ty Stewart. This came out of an out-of-print hobbiest magazine called American Indian Crafts & Culture. Its a hefty article which describes how to make each article of clothing including mocs, ribbon skirt, blouse, accesories etc. Has some good pics too altho they are all b/w. Send me a private message if interested.
