Hello

Just thought i'd write in our forum since we seem to be lacking in here lately.

Just wondering what everyone was up to this year, and what have you done so far,

How do pow wow affect your life? like is it all you think about and plan for a year in advance, or do you grab a pow wow when in the mood?

etc........

I haven't danced in like 2 years, but I'm busy beading for my niece. She's 5 years old, and a southern cloth dancer. She already has 3 sets of beadwork (crown, hairties, etc), and now I'm working on the 4th one. The way my life's been busy lately, the new beadwork won't be completed until May.

Other than small benefit pow-wows in the area, I haven't been to a major pow-wow since October which was in Kinder, LA. I wish that I could attend more pow-wows, but my current job doesn't allow me to go because I have to work on some weekends.

Anyway.....just wanted to say something because this forum was lacking. I KNOW there are several other southern cloth dancers out there!

YOOHOO!!!

The last powwow I was at was a New Year's Eve powwow here in Oklahoma. I don't travel out of state for powwows, I'm always busy w/school (studying and writing research papers like mad!) so I try to get to powwows in my state.

Well, I work for an indian school here in oklahoma so I have my summers off. But the cost of travel is outrageous. We traveled last year and came home broke. So, I thought I would like to travel this summer but think I am going to go to school and pick up some college credits I need for my job. Also, there are only a few pow wows I really like to go to and so I will just save for those. I may send my two older girls to travel with my mom though.
I went to Kinder and Prairie Island. Will go to local pow wows around Apache this winter and get ready for Gathering. Getting some new skirts, but am not sure about beadwork. My cousin is redoing my buckskin for my daughter and possibly I may wear it if I go to Shcemitzun ( again, it depends on when we go back to school)
Also, I saw Buffy Simmons at a basketball homecoming and she is having her baby in March. She looks very pretty and is in really good shape for getting ready to have a baby. I probably still outweigh her by 100 lbs. ha ha
that too, I am walking and getting my knees strong for the spring. Hopefully I will have more fun this season and not hurt so much. I don't want knee surgery, so keep in your prayers for a healing in my knees. They sound like "snap, crackle , and pop" when I bend them. LOL
Hope every one has a nice winter and looking forward to seeing everyone on the trail. May you have health and good spirits to see you through the remaining winter season.
And keep our boring board alive. haha

Well we have been hitting a few powow's here and there, not as many as we would have liked to... doing some traveling and keeping up on beadwork, and outfits... Getting ready for my daughters giveaway later this spring, and looking forward to the new powwow year.. Hope to see everyone out there, travel safe and my prayers are with you all.. :)

Buffy is pregnant?! She's soooo young.

I'm taking night classes, too, so that contributes to my busy factor. If I go full time in the next 2 semesters, I should get my associates, but I'm only going part-time.

SLTATE...if you are who I think you are.....well, you're in my prayers (even if you aren't who I think you are).

Most people don't realize that southern cloth dancers have it rough, too. Most people think that it's easy, but it's wear and tear on the knees.

Jeez, I need to work out and get back into shape. I want to get back into dancing mode. I've been taking a few years breaks here and there. It's not good because I tend to lose my rhythm when dancing after a break.

My name is Sandy (Harris) Tate Nevaquaya.
Yes, Buffy is having a baby. She is having girl in March. She looks really good..I think her boyfriend is from around Ponca City.
Yes, cloth dancing is harder than it looks..especially on your knees. If you have been dancing as long as I have, through 4 babies and being overweight...it eventually catches up with you. Looking graceful and being graceful are two different stories. ha ha I have to practice. Me and my girls practice dancing to different drum groups weekly. They are better than I ever could be...well they are 20 years younger too. LOL But to study the different drum groups and their beats helps you to be prepared when you travel to different pow wows.
Looking forward to the summer. Don't know if I will make Livingston since Red Earth is the same time(that was dumb, everyone knows Livingston is on that date and they always have been forever, so that will split alot of us. Yvonne told me she is going to Livingston, probably Tracy too.)

Hey Sandy! I thought that was you. This is Heather......my brothers (Dave, Chickdog, Delbert aka Buckwheat) sing w/OT.

Yeah, since Red Earth is the same weekend as our pow-wow this year, it seems that we will lose attendance on dancers. It was said byKerri M. that it was the ONLY weekend available to schedule REd Earth for that weekend. She could have decided to move it again, or change the month considering that her family is used to coming to Livingston every year.....buuuut....*shrugs*... oh well. i guess we'll just have to see.

Gosh, that's too bad. Livingston is a good pow wow. I am not sure Keri is affiliated with Red Earth, I think there are new directors, which is not good. She was a great spokesperson for Red Earth and did a good job last year.
I know Livingston will not change their dates, they shouldn't have to because that has been their annual for several years. So, those of you who choose not to go to Red Earth and are looking for a good pow wow to go to.....Livingston is a great powwow, their hospitality is awesome, good singing, gourd dancing, excellent grounds, and good prize money in the singing and the dancing. It is only two days, too. It is worth the trip. I am going to try to make it, my kids are in ball and cheeleading camps, my husband is coming off of tour that sunday, so I might have to go by myself. LOL Tell eveyone "hi" for me , Heather, and looking forward to eating some good A.C. cooking in June. LOL

I try to hit as many powwows as I can. There are a few that I plan to go a year in advance like for the Labor Day holidays in OK and I hope this year to go to the Choctaw festival in MS.

I have to take it easy the beginning of this year though. Just had knee surgery (right side). Wear and tear on the knee got me:( . Got to work back up to full strength so I can complete a whole powwow. Went to a powwow this weekend and could only do a couple of inter-tribals before the spasms started.:dontknow: Don't know how long it will take to get back in shape but I will get there.

Ouch!!! That is what I am afraid of, going under the knife to save my knees. Hope you are dancing soon and enjoying the trail.
I have been to Philadelphia, MS a couple of times for their Veteran's Day pow wows and I had alot of fun. Besides their pow wow, they are really nice and their casino is awesome. When I went they just had the one, I understand they have two hotels now? But it was alot of fun and I had the chance to see their dances and thier dress. They all speak thier language and that was really cool....little kids coming up to me and talking Choctaw.
I work at an indian school and we have several students from that area. They are very talented, as athletes, the arts and academics.
I have only been to Tahlequah to pow wow once for Labor Day. It was nice, there were alot of people there. I did not see much of the culture, but saw alot of people in the audience, at the vendors, etc. Very populated.
I am looking forward to Gathering and Marksville this spring. I go to Gathering because I always have I guess. My dad used to dance there and he won it several times in the straight dance and we just always went. Marksville is going to be nice because several of our relatives are serving on the staff from back home (Stroud,Pawnee,Shawnee, McCloud areas) It's too bad I travel clear to LA. to visit them. ha ha
