Chief Illini has been rightfully retired.

But what about this bozo?

I picked up an "advert-zine" put out by a local car sales chain opened it up and found an "article" about Chief Zee in it. The scanned image of the article is at the bottom of this post.

I went to their website (Easterns Automotive Group) and found this in their "fun stuff" category:

Personally, I'm going to send Eastern Motors some email pointing out how obnoxiously offensive this ad campaign is. I'll also be calling corporate in the morning.

There are groups that are working on changing the Washington DC football team's name (and have been for years). Complaining to the football team's owner won't help when confronting an "unofficial" mascot. Working on a business that uses this person in their ad campaigns - hopefully (and eventually) a different story. A lot will depend on the feedback they receive, I guess.

What do you think would happen if I dressed up as a black minstrel, and was a mascot for a team named the blackskins and did silly dances in a halloween type black person costume? I'd be drawn and quartered within days. But this crap is accepted!

Y ou'll never get rid of the fans like this... they seem to be incapable of understanding that what they do could be offensive to anyone because they feel their love and loyalty for these teams supercedes anything else.

When I was driving around the US in a truck in the spring of last year, we went through this small town and there was a huge sign for the local school's girl's soccer team, and they were called the "Squaws" ... I remembered the debate over the name, and how regardless of the historical use of the word it's now "bad" in general use, and wondered how those girls would feel if they really knew the current meaning.

But they (in general) just don't care.

My blog is optimized to exploit the 'Net and "Web 2.0" for maximum exposure (the 'Net is what I do for a living). According to my site's logs, Eastern Motors (who placed the ad) visited my blog entry ten times in the space of 15 minutes shortly after it went up. So hopefully they'll wonder if they borked badly, and *maybe* change.

I know, I'm an optimist. outershell's quote from MLK pretty much sums it up though :(

you know, that is really, really true. and messed up.
it made me think of how a when a team wins the the superbowl or world series or whatever the fans riot and trash their own city....
its like there's no logic to sports fans sometimes....

I know.. it's ridiculous how people elevate these "off" guys to superstar level .. mascots and such... But I know hardcore fans and they truly believe that they make a difference with their support. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. But they won't change to save the world if they think it would mess up the game.

I've never been much of a sports type person myself so it's all a mystery to me why things like High school football is so important.... or why it's the end of the world if you lose. I just think entertainment should be entertainment and nothing more.
