"Unto These Hills"
Wondering if anyone here from the Cherokee tribe is a part of the outdoor drama "Unto these Hills" in Cherokee, NC. I just moved to North Carolina a few months ago and I would really like to come see it when it opens this summer. Also, has anyone seen it?

Outdoor drama? Do you mean, like a regular amphitheater performance? I supposed I'd consider the DVD if they made one, sounds interesting. The only thing we got up here in the NW is the Happy Canyon Show at Pendleton, OR.

I haven't seen it yet, but from what I have read it is an outdoor amphitheater performance put on by the Cherokee tribe in Cherokee, NC telling the heartbreaking story of the Trail of Tears. It's really popular with tourists who come to the Smokies each summer. Just curious if anyone on the board here is involved with it :-).

I've seen it, and it is very breathtaking and beautiful. I've always heard it was depressing and sad, but it was rewritten over the past few years to present a happier message of hope for the future. I saw the newer version last summer, and it was amazing! It was still sad, but there were happy parts too. It kind of has you on an emotional rollercoaster, but the good kind. However, there are a lot of tourists, and Boy Scouts, and they are ususally pretty annoying throughout the whole thing. The people sitting behind me wouldn't shut up and were laughing loudly during serious parts of the play. Other than that, it was wonderful and I highly reccomend it.

They indeed make many changes last year, and I understand it many more Cherokee people were involved, Hanay G was called in to choreograph and many parts were reworked, making it more real to life. I understand that it was very moving and that the attendance increased tremendously. I am not sure if all those changes are still in place, however, but would encourage a def "look-see" to be sure. The season opens in June and goes through August.
The story is based on the Cherokee relocation act, speaking of the Trail of Tears, and also those folks that stayed "unto these hills" and how they survived and how they managed to keep the culture alive. There are two other Native Outdoor dramas that run during the summer: The Lost Colony in Manteo and Strike at the Wind! in Pembroke, NC. Plan a vacation around them - you will not be disappointed. And, yes, I do work in the cultural tourism business (can you tell?) Ace

Arkansas about twenty or so years before the removal. From the stories of my family, when the larger group of Cherokee arrived there was division between those who newly arrived and those who had been there fighting with the Osage for the land. I think the UKB website would do a better job of explaining this than I could do: http://www.unitedkeetoowahband.org/ Click on "About UKB" and then click on History.
