pow-wow wedding

If you were going to get married at a pow-wow, what would you do? have it in the arena? Would you have it at the camp?

Would you have a song or have bridesmaids and groom dance around the arena?

Would you have everyone dress in their regalia or for the guys would you wear just ribbon shirts and slacks? and ladies in full buckskin dress or all matching cloth dresses?

What about preacher? do you have one? or do you have MC preside over you?

just curious about everyone's ideas and opinions. :)

Ndns don't get married!!

they just grow old together.....or move onto another shag......I mean....SNAG.

JK

Hmmmm......

First off, I wouldn't get hitched at a powwow, somehow, it seems tacky.

I'd go for the full blown out deal.....really go off and get a church and all that. Seems more memorable.

Expensive.....and more or less cookie cutter, but, hey.....I'm a hopeless romantic type, who goes for that kinda crap. .....but, memorable. It will be. That way, the WHOLE day is devoted to YOU TWO, tyin the knot. ...and not just two hours or so, then back into the contest. I mean, would you want the MC calling out categories while yer tryin to be all serious about what's goin on?

For ME....it's ....none of this, dance around the arena, and you two burn yer snaggin' blankets or pass them on to the best man or the bridesmaids. Or, instead of throwing yer bouquet, you toss yer snaggin blanket...aye!

Unless yer hurtin to just get it over with and then move onto takin' first in the dance contest...the, GO FOR IT!

I've always thought marriage was something serious, it's a committment, it should be marked by an occassion totally devoted to the union. With all yer closest friends and family there to help you immortalize the whole day.

A powwow, somehow.....I guess, it's okay, but, for me.....church, two rings, my family, friends, old snags in the wings....aye!

IF, I had to do it at a powwow. I think, in camp would be okay. Then ask for a hella huge blanket dance to fund the powwow honeymoon!

to me, it depends on big the pow wow is. if you are talking somehting like gathering of nations, not getting married there. but if you are talking a small pow wow, then getting married is fine. friends of mine got married at a small pow wow. people were already in regalia. they had opted to do special outfits for the wedding. they were able to get married in the arena and had their "first dance" right after the ceremony. then an intertrial after that. they had arrnaged to marry when there was a lull in the activites.

I've seen that - Michael and Becky Roberts about 12 years ago got married right in the arena @ GON - Mike wore a tux, Becky wore a formal dress (can't remember if it was a full-blown wedding dress type thing), and he got down on one knee and sang some gushy romantic song to her - then Evelyn whiteeyes performed the service. Right smack in the middle of the powwow too....

Some friends of mine actually put on a powwow for their wedding - since that was how they met, it was kinda appropriate. It was a small deal, no contests, and they got me to be MC. Of course, there were lots of non-powwow people at the wedding, so most of my jokes totally bombed. Anyway, as I remember, there were a few rounds of intertribals, then the groom brought his entourage into the arena loaded down w/ blankets and give-away stuff. Once he was in place the bride came in with her parents and crew - everybody was dressed in their dance clothes, including the preacher! They said their vows, had a big giveaway (bro gave a big painted buffalo robe to his new parents in-law) and then the new couple basically served as headman/lady for the rest of the dance.... of course we ate and ate and ate - they had it catered by a barbeque joint, but all in all it was pretty cool.

crow fair

hmmm... i don't think i've ever seen a powwow wedding were it actually occurs in the arena - that would be something!
now i've seen fellas propose to their ladies in the arena - but that was something else... it was so romantical! haha...

anyway... some of my relatives have married at crow fair, but the ceremony & reception was held at the camp (along w/the feast afterwards - yumm!). there's so much going on at crow fair, there's just no way everyone can do what they want in the arena, so a lot of ceremonies do happen at the camps, such as adoptions, clan feeds, weddings, etc...

back in 02 i was in my cousins wedding... and all the ladies/bridesmaids were dressed in our elkteeth dresses and all the menfolk were dressed western/cowboy style. i think a preacher conducted the ceremony too - but it's been so long, i can't recall (i know it wasn't the mc)... and then afterwards all the menfolk praised them by singing... and then the typical reception was held w/a feast, cake, presents... you know

anyway - this is a good topic... i'd like to see what other folks have to say too & am interested in hearing stories!

byt he way super - you don't have to have your wedding at a powwow... we can just plan a powwow social around your wedding! (then it can be all about ya'll!)

we didn't have a powwow but I got married in my buckskin and my bridesmaids wore satin day dresses and carried eagle fans instead of bouquets. My husband doesn't dance he sings so he and his groomsmen wore khakis, white button downs and Pendleton Vest. It wasn't in a church but a community center building.
The bridesmaids came into my matron of honor's song and I was escorted in by my dad by my song (the first time it was sung....later to be put on a cd - Enuff Said). Members of Sizzortail sang for us. Outside we had a big tent and fed dinner (Cornsoup, Frybread, Meatpies, etc....) before the wedding and after the ceremony we did cake and signing the marriage licence out there. Before the bouquet toss, my Matrons of Honor's little bro got his hand drum out and made us a round dance song w/ English lyrics. Wasn't a powwow but had a lot of powwow aspects. While we were getting ready after the dinner they played powwow music and people could dance etc.....

I was telling musicedu77 (who's getting married) that i read in a newspaper about a couple who were married pow wow style. The bride wore her traditional cloth dress (dancer). The groom wore a ribbon shirt (singer/drummer). I cant remember where the location was, but they were pictured infront of a teepee. Family member from both sides that danced wore their regalia. Wedding guests wore very fancy clothes. Im talking pants suits, blazers, Macy's, and Saks Fifth Avenue. No one was allowed to weas jeans, tenni-shoes, t-shirts, short pants, ect,. As they joined hands, tribal elders said a few word, prayed for them, and became husband and wife (or whatever indiands call one another). I dont know if they opened gift?? They had their first meal as a married couple. Then afterwards, had a full traditional pow wow.

I remember some Classic and I mean Classic situations....

Seen some good ones and some bad.....

Don't wanna hear about the good though....right....

as far as rugged....The classic "I'm gonna repeat what I saw somewhere move...." it seemed to be a trend in the 90's....Although some of the proposals were WEAK at best....And some of the Powwows? Wongeh! I'd say out of the 10 situations I saw....1 made it? Then the "I'm wearing a tek outfit and i'm gonna propose one..." Oh I can go on and on.....
