Teachers........
Who or what makes a teacher? What's your thoughts on not just the ones in formal school........but those that teach life lessons. What is it that makes their lessons unforgettable? Who have been your best teachers? Are you one? What ways? (didn't know i could ask so many consecutive questions did ya?)

Any person that encountours another person is a teacher of some sort.
Many do not realize that thier words, and actions could shape the minds of somone else that saw or heard them at some point. Each contact with another human or living thing can lead to a lesson learned good or bad. its more important for me to find a lesson in each experience I have. these are the teachers for me. Life experience has taught me so much so far ,and I have so much more to learn every day. |

i remember my math teacher the most cause he was mean....LOL at the time i was in high school i thought he was, but he was always tough on the students pushing them to do better........use our minds LOL......after i became a parent myself i understood what he was trying to instill in us as students........ success within ourselves, using what skills and abilities we have individually to achieve in life........he wasnt mean after all. LOL, i remember him to this day.

I 2nd that....
Quote:
A teacher myself, of both Math & Science, for a local Magnet Middle School (6th Grade to be exact), the biggest thing is relevance. No matter the situation, if someone can relate to what someone else is trying to share w/ them, they can take that, manipulate it to their similar situations, and make us of it the way needed. This way our minds/problem solving skills are challenged on a regular basis. After four years of teaching, I had a little girl come back to say "hi" at the end of the school year a few months ago and I could not recognize her. I must have made some sort of an impact! I guess this is what makes me a unique teacher. I've had so many parents tell me how their child enjoy my class (or just being around me). The same goes w/ people outside the classroom. I try to be as genuine as possible w/ people and honest w/ my input. And all of this comes from experience; whether it is first hand knowledge or experiences of stories from people I've listened to over the few years I've been on this Earth. I'd have to say my most influential "teachers" have been several people. The first is obviously my parents and grandparents. My father specifically was a teacher and an administrator outside the home. At home, he didn't say much out of the way, but, it always lasted in my head. Two other people were my Professors at East Carolina University; Ron Preston and another gentleman whose name has slipped my mind at the moment. I saw the importance of the relevance and to some degree I guess this is where I began to model myself within the classroom. The last one I wanna mention is actually my father-in-law. I enjoy his "passivness" in his lessons. They're a bit challenging from time to time b/c he talks in "circles" and I'm left struggling to find the meaning of what he's saying. But, its good for me b/c it "challenges my mind/problem solving skills". And, I, in turn, do the same with others. It aggreavates my wife to no end... Her thoughts are...."Ughhh...I've married my father!"

We are surrounded by teachers every day, and night. The trick is to learn to listen and understand what they have to teach us.
Even enemies are excellent teachers. They reflect to us the things we do not accept about ourselves and show us a good direction for change. Excellent thread. M'gwitch.

A good teacher should be passionate about what they are teaching, and, enjoy themselves. My Mom taught school for 33 years, and, I'm still meeting people that she taught. They are always telling me how much they loved having her as their teacher.

Hey DE, I k now what you mean. My mom taught in NC and in Virginia (several places in NC). People are always talking about what a good teacher she was. Man, the people in Hollister love her! Barry (the one who has Richmond powwow) calls her "my teacher"~ I took her to Hollister in April for a reunion of the old Haliwa school and there were so many of her students there and they told stories of when she taught them. It actually made me tear up!
