Any rose growers here? I need advice.
Hey guys,
I need advice on my roses. I have the dreaded brown spots... they're not real bad on the bushes but they are on the vines. What can I do to get rid of it? I have aphids on a few things.... what can i use to get rid of them without poisoning everything in the yard??? (birds, butterflies, dragonflies, etc)

Here are a few of my roses. The first is the mini-bush, the second is some in the front yard, the last is this freakin HUGE yellow rosebush in the back yard. That monster is like seven feet and has bark! I've never seen one that big.
I was wondering if I should remove the spotted leaves or use something on them.... normally I'd ask mom but she said that Dad was the one that took care of theirs lol. ![]()

a few more
Here are a few more that I'm having problems with.... the yellow is the same one up there... I'm putting it in here so I can get as much advice as possible.
The last pic, I have no idea what it is..... but I need to give it a trellis (sp) or something before it consumes my mailbox.

To prevent and control Black Spot without chemicals: 1. Maintain good sanitation: Sanitation practices are critical in reducing future disease development. In the fall remove all old leaves on the ground, and any mulch that has been contaminated with infected leaves. For right now, I would thoroughly clean out all your beds of debris - leaves/stones/mulch the works - clean it back to bare ground and bag and throw the stuff you haul out of there away. The material that is around the roses are all places that have been potentially infected and are where the fungus can thrive even when the season turns drier - reinfecting new growth over and over. 2. Remove and destroy infected canes: Canes affected by black spot have dark or reddish areas (lesions). Severely infected plants should be pruned back in the fall or early spring to within 1 to 2 inches of the bud union, according to variety and cultivar. During the growing season, remove infected leaves as they appear. Be sure to disinfect your pruning shears in a bucket of bleach water (1 part bleach/3 parts water) between EACH cut to minimize spreading contamination from diseased areas. 3. Keep leaves dry: It is best not to syringe plants with water, and do not use overhead irrigation. Promote rapid drying of leaves by planting roses in the full sun, and spacing new plantings far enough apart to allow for good air circulation. Pruning out the center of your rose bushes will also increase circulation. You may want to plan on moving some of the plants that are in the shade to more sunny and well drained locations in the upcoming late fall/early winter, once annual die-back has happened There are chemicals that will definitely stop Black Spot in it's tracks but using them does indiscriminate harm to other creatures. As severe as the yellow tall bush looks, without chemicals - you may well lose it. If you decide to go the chemical route, contact your local county agricultural extension - they can tell you what is most affective in your growing zone and when is the optimum time for application. ~b2w |

what you can do is make sure the plant is well fed, roses are heavy feeders. i found using a lot of compost as a mulch around the base of the bush is good besides adding a good rose food as directed on the packaging. i found that placing a banana peel under the compost mulch helps. i don't know what the banana does but it helps my roses.
