Sacred Texts/Holy Books what have you read?
I just wondered if anyone reads any holy books? Any whatsoever. I was raised by fundamentalist Christian parents and of course had to read and familiarize myself with the Bible. I've read through the entire New Testament at least 4 times that I can remember, and large portions of the Old, but I don't recall reading it in its entirety from cover to cover.
Because of the closed-mindedness of my upbringing I became particularly curious and became a self-taught student of comparitive religion. I found this site: http://www.sacred-texts.com/ which is pretty interesting, but I've also gotten lots of free books in the mail about other religions and the sacred texts they use in their services. I'm currently reading the Koran, I'm on the seventh Surah, there are 114 so I have a ways to go. I also have copies of Hindu literature and the entire Theravada Buddhist canon the "Tipitaka" on CD-ROM I like the Sacred Texts site a lot because I love ancient literature, history, and archaeology. |

Yeah, first thing I did after 9/11 was get a hold of a copy of the Koran. I've spent a lot of time studying the Bible, Pentatuch, Kerba Negast, etc. but wanted to check out the Koran in particular.
As it turns out, I'd read it before--its basically the Old Testament... Lots of writing about Laws. And a lot of "begat-ting" going on. Hey, maybe those guys aren't so bad after all! :) |
