Unhappy paypal on ebay..

my brother aaron had a paypal account on ebay...theres this dude who wiped out his banking account...theres a investigation going on right now...aparently its all happened to college students..whoever this person is there working for the u.s. govt education (fafsa) and posing as a employee...thats as far as they tracked it...so especially you college students be careful not to give out any personal information even if its paypal..

I have a Paypal account, and yeah, there are people who try to scam you.

I had a email sent to me saying that they needed to verify my account information. The link read something like this http://www.blahblah.com/2www.paypal.com/verify. Just the fact that the primary domain wasn't even paypal was a tipoff, then the sub being 2www.paypal was the icer.....a scam.

I get those email notices all the time about you need to verify your paypal info. Also for all kinds of banks that I don't even have accounts at. I've had the paypal letters come to email addresses that aren't even linked to my paypal. They seem to work on a hit or miss method, or at least some of them do, in hopes that someone will just give up their info. You can forward any mail you have that you suspect to spoof@paypal.com

Oh yeah, another thing that was a tipoff that the link was a fraud was also in the URL.

The address started off http:// instead of https:// to indicate a secure site. A legit and secure site would not have you sign on a http site.

That's right KN. Another clue is like I mentioned that often they send it to just another address that you use frequently and they have been able to snatch that from some newsgroup or something you belong to. Sometimes I have received them and the 'to' section of the email is blank--they are sending them in masses to huge amounts of people in hopes of getting some responses. The return address is often a clue also. If you look at the message source, often you can find where the message originated from yourself.
I always copy all the header info and paste it into the message then forward it to PayPal.
These buzzards pray on people who are not so knowledgable about the internet and/or the people who are super busy and just react to a request for updating your info; they never notice all the small stuff like what email it was sent to or if it is a secure page or not, they just trying to take care of their stuff and then get ripped off.
I have 3 email accounts that I use frequently. If I had a bank account at all the places I get request for me to update my info at I would be somewhere on vacation.

Wonder if this has anything to do with most college students using the wireless internet.

I just wanted to post that I received yet another one of these today--this time on an email that I do use for PayPal, and it was very authentic looking, it even went to a secure page that begins with https. They had everything almost identical with the exception of they did not have a country code in there.
Better safe than sorry, contact paypal if you have any doubts at all.
