Return to Flight - STS-114
FULL COVERAGE: Space Shuttle
NASA Sets July 13 Shuttle Launch Date AP - 1 hour, 44 minutes ago CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - After 2 1/2 two years of frustrating setbacks and delays, NASA officially set July 13 as the launch date Thursday for the first space shuttle flight since the Columbia tragedy. NASA Administrator Michael Griffin announced the news after a two-day space agency review of Discovery's readiness to blast off. "Based on a very thorough and very successful flight readiness review, we're currently `go' for launch of Discovery on July 13," Griffin said.

We have a good friend that works at NASA and helped train the Columbia crew. He and his boys were waiting for the Columbia to land the day it blew up. He told us that when it was a minute late he knew something was wrong. They have everything timed that closely. Now his ex won't let him take the boys to even see a launch or anything else at NASA.

I'm glad to hear they finally set a date, but will be surprised if it goes up on the 13th or any time around then. i realy hope they can keep the program going, but would not be surprised to see it die off. I have a friend who is an astronaut (went up a couple of years ago), and we missed his launch I would do anything in the world to see him go up again.

Discovery in Good Shape for Launch
10 July 2005, 9:54 a.m. EDT The space shuttle Discovery is in prime shape for its scheduled launch on July 13, NASA officials said today. In a morning countdown status briefing, launch officials said that both the orbiter and its payload are ready for NASA’s STS-114 spaceflight, the first planned shuttle launch since the 2003 Columbia accident. Discovery has a 10-minute launch window on July 13 opening at 3:45 p.m. EDT (1945 GMT), though flight controllers are targeting 3:51 p.m. EDT (1951 GMT) for the actual space shot. There is a 30 percent chance of weather violations for July 13, which increases to 40 percent in the following days, shuttle weather officer Kathy Winters said. |

Weather conditions worsen for shuttle
Prospects for launch drop from 60 percent to 40 percent Discovery is scheduled to blast off at 3:51 p.m. ET. Live weather Cape Canaveral, FL Updated 10:55 a.m. ET July 13, 2005 CURRENTLY WEDNESDAY 84º Hi: 88º Lo: 76º Mostly Cloudy Isolated Thunderstorms FEELS LIKE: 95º • Extended forecast By Alan Boyle Science editor MSNBC Updated: 12:44 p.m. ET July 13, 2005 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Prospects darkened on Wednesday for an on-time launch of NASA's first space shuttle mission in more than two years, with the chances of favorable weather dropping from 60 percent to 40 percent. Lightning flashed, thunder rumbled and rain spattered Kennedy Space Center in Florida, even as Discovery's crew started boarding the shuttle in hopes of a 3:51 p.m. ET liftoff. The launch team easily handled a couple of last-minute snags encountered during preparations for a mission that would mark NASA's return to flight after the catastrophic breakup of the shuttle Columbia in February 2003. But the change in the weather could postpone launch for at least a day. Air Force 1st Lt. Mindy Chavez, one of the weather officers providing forecasts for NASA, told MSNBC.com that a high-pressure ridge had moved farther south than expected. That put a damper on expectations that an afternoon sea breeze would push thunderstorms far enough to the west to keep the way clear for liftoff. NASA's rules call for scrubbing the launch if there are thunderstorms within 20 nautical miles of the space center. At midday, Chavez said conditions were "red" for any launch attempt due to clouds — but that no-go condition could still shift as the 10-minute launch window approached. |

13 July 2005, 1:30 p.m. EDT CAPE CANAVERAL, Darn! Well, at least the continuous bit-in-test routines are working. A lot goes into the firmware that monitor the operational health of the vessel on a continuous basis. The software needs to check all vital component sensors and relay an effector which ultimately shuts down the launch when a condition is not deemed to be either a caution, warning or advisory. It's a good thing I didn't wear my "Return to Flight" shirt today! |

Discovery’s STS-114 mission, is now set to launch at 10:39 a.m. EDT (1439 GMT) on July 26. If nothing bars a July 26 space shot, there should be at least four opportunities to launch Discovery. Should it fail to fly Tuesday, Discovery’s launch window runs through July 31 (including the 27th, 29th and 31st), with the next flight opportunity opening on Sept. 9 (during the Navajo Nation Fair!).
