Question Natives and Oscar

Buffy Saint Marie won an oscar for that song "up where we belong" right? and was Graham Green nominated before? How many natives have been nominated?

2010 ~ Apachedumpling for her work in films including the documentary "Super Size Me NDN style" , and "The Lonely Road of a Dumpling".

Naw seriously I was watching the Oscars and was thinkin, ya know no one made a HUGE deal about Jamie Foxx and Morgan Freeman winning since the likes of Halle Berry and Denzel, so maybe the time is ripe for ppl of indigenous backgrounds really strive for it. however an oscar is just an 8 lb. statue. It would be very fulfilling to see more native screenplay writers, directors, musicians, actors, etc to be recognized on a very large scale. I have dabbled in writing and hoping that after my college career has ended, that i would be able to apply myself to writing again and see what happens from there.

I thought that the evening was very focussed on showcasing African-american talent - like they knew it would be Jamie's and Morgan's year. Lots of African-american presenters and they worked Beyonce to the bone with those 3 songs. It was all about celebrating African-american talent if you ask me. I think Oprah's was the only non-production camera allowed backstage.

Oh and I agree with what you said about it being ripe for idigenous people - look at Los Lonely Boys getting a Grammy in the Pop category - and not the specialty category.

wonder if it had sumthing to in part with being Black History Month too... they sure been advertising how different the world would be without the Blacks.. such as music, fashion television, dance, ect....

Now its time to capitalze on the Native contributions... and the time IS NOW! Our people are so gifted and talented in many areas... and why is it that we ONLY get a week of recognition.. Not a month and we been here the longest!!! hehe...
but seriously to ALL artists and pepole of vision its time to put ourselves out there.. to be known to the world... for the world to take notice... and for such recognition to be that of positive light. Time to wipe out those stereotypes and to have the others take notice of what we are truly about and for them to see that we have so much to offer.

NATIVE AMERICAN IDOL... Here we Come!!! LOL....

LOL singin "ndn car"...take that NDN Simon!!!!

I don't think it has anything to do with Black History month, but I seriously believe it was about dern time for Morgan Freeman to win, his acting is impeccable and adds humanity like no one else could. However in the case of Jamie Foxx, I think it might have been in light of Ray Charles' death this past summer that not only the Grammy's but Oscar have taken that into light. I mean geez it took him one nomination to win best actor and Freeman four nominations.
This year emphasized the biographic films, based on past celebs, if u havent noticed. lol

anyhoo let the red man speak!!! and win an oscar too...lol

Get real, minorities whining about other minorities is exactly why whites are still the wealthiest and most powerful group of people in the US. Haven't you realized that every movement in American history , including AIM has been based on the Civil Rights movement. How about you be supportive to other minorites and understand how they got bigger and better things.
