Help Some natives out!!
Howdy all I haven't been here in a long time, I am now working in my tribal office as the youth group coordinators assistant. :Thinking
We are starting this youth group fresh and I was wondering what type of stuff youth groups do these days? :dontknow: Does anyone know where the Northwest Indian Youth Conference is next year? Any info would help, our youth need some inspiration. There is a teen youth group and a k-7 youth group. I want to instill leadership qualities and community strength. :Help |

*L you nut! *L But you are right about UNITY (United National Indian Tribal Youth). They are well established, have a great networking system and do a lot of positive things for Indian youth. They also have a sight on the internet.

I am involved with a couple of Rez communities bringing in inmates and parolees to communities doing presentations for youth at risk. It enables Aboriginal offenders the opportunity to tell their stories and give them a sense of paying back some of the bad things they have done. Most of the guys that work with me in these communities are really grateful to be helping out a little.
I have also gone to schools to do the same thing and it has been well received. These schools are public schools and there is a cross section of where they originate. We have a bunch of youth from our local rez's who attend conferences in Edmonton, Alberta each spring break. One group actually does fundraising so that they can go do one good trip a year to somewhere. This past year they went to the PNE in Vancouver for two days. They stayed in motel rooms and went to the fair, movies and out to eat with approximately 14-15 youth from their community. It allowed them to be away from home and spend time with their friends. They raised enough for approximately $500.00 per person, and they also paid for the chaperones as well. It gave them a real sense of accomplishment that they raised the money. They didn't have to rely on the Band or their parents for the money. The youth worker said it really made a difference for them. Hope this is enough for you. |

We live in a predominately white folks town and they are not too cultured, even tho they live near one of the biggest Rez in Canada. We were discussing this at the supper table and one girl in my daughters grade 5 class asked if we lived in a teepee, I about fell on the floor when i heard this. I couldnt belive it, either the kid was being just plain ignorant or really had no clue. My 14 year old daughter and approached me and asked if i would help her set up A native club either at her school or one out of our home. I hesitated because im not a teacher but she really wants this so i will do what i can. We are presenting a letter of proposal to the principal of her school next week. My daughter just wants her friends and classmates to see what our people have to offer and how beautiful of a people we are. i am so proud of her taking this step and standing for what she believes in. We thought about just sharing the basics, legends stories, crafts, and maybe even a bit of language. Culturalism starts sumwhere, and i hope some of the other kids will be open to it. I have even heard parents voice that there should be some kind of class or something, so hoipefully we can get a process rolling. Again good luk in your adventure, and rely alot on your elders in the area, they may be able to give ya heads up on what they feel that youth today need to know and learn. |

The youth these days are not very inspired, they don't really have to many great role models here. I want to show them there is more than the rez ya know. They have options to go where they please and be great people someday. I have contacted UNITY and the Native American Boys and Girls club to get started and they are sending the info so I can start. The big thing is getting them in one spot. I am working on it. I need a quick discription on what elective do like the President, vice president, treasurer, and secretary
